Still kept there own culture identity.     9. 9. <ul><li>In early Korea, different clans controlled different parts of the country. The Han later gained control of most of the country. </li></ul><ul><li>The Koreans adopted Buddhism, Confucianism and a centralized government from the Chinese. </li></ul><ul><li>Federations formed and created three rival tribes. The Silla, defeated the other two and gained control of the whole Korean peninsula. </li></ul><ul><li>Under Silla rule, Buddhist monasteries were built. </li></ul><ul><li>The writing system they created was suitable for writing Korean phonetically while still using Chinese characters. </li></ul>Matthew

THE KORYU DYNASTY <ul><li>A rebel officer named Wang Kon gained control of Korea in 935 and started the Koryu Dynasty. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Adopted the Chinese central government, but did not provide the social mobility for Koreans as it did for the Chinese. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Koryu was divided between aristocracy and the rest of the population, slaves, commoners and the military. </li></ul><ul><li>High positions were offered to nobles’ sons and became hereditary. This spurred many rebellions. </li></ul><ul><li>The Koryu Dynasty remained in power until 1231 when the Mongols attacked. This lasted until the fall of the Mongol empire in the 1350s. </li></ul><ul><li>Oppression and taxes rose and in 1392, a group of scholar-officials and military leaders overthrew the Koryu Dynasty and created the Choson Dynasty. </li></ul>Matthew

KORYU CULTURE <ul><li>Korean artists produced celadon pottery, known for its milky-green glaze. </li></ul><ul><li>Writers and scholars made fine pottery and wrote the first national history of Korea. </li></ul><ul><li>Korean artisans produced one of the biggest treasures in Buddhism. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>the canon of Buddhist scriptures, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>destroyed by the Mongols, it spurred the re-creation of this set of blocks. </li></ul></ul></ul>Matthew
    12. 12. <ul><li>The Koreans Buddhist monasteries produced elegant stone and many bronze sculptures. </li></ul><ul><li>Koryu is an abbreviation of Koguryo and is the origin of the modern name Korea. </li></ul><ul><li>The wealthy nobles would build their land holdings into huge estates, leaving other groups to scrape by with little. </li></ul><ul><li>Korean artists were inspired by Song porcelain artists. </li></ul><ul><li>The secret recipe for celadon disappeared during the Mongol occupation. </li></ul><ul><li>The wooden blocks for the Buddhist scripture were under construction for 60 years. </li></ul>Matthew S.
