Q2-38
1. Analysis of our Music Video Natasha, Fikret, Charles, Catherine
2. Media Language The theme of our music video was Love and Romance. INSERT PICTURE. Natasha's’ outfit is red, which is the colour of love which also matches her hair. In contrast Charlie is wearing grey, depressing clothes which represents his state of mind without love. The editing of the borders to make them soft edges is a way to reflect a dream like state which is also associated with love. The flashbacks are very conventional of a love story as the represent a life of togetherness in the past. We emphasized the feeling of loneliness in our camera shots because most of them only have one person in them. The connection between lyrics and visuals helps the audience to understand the artists need for love. The use of transitions also helps convey the idea of love because they are smooth and not obvious instead of being disjointed.
3. Narrative We have found in our video, because of the presence of only two characters, that trying to relate it to a narrative idea is quite hard. Looking at Todorovs’ 3 point structure associate parts of our video to it. Equilibrium – Is just Charlie playing the guitar and the camera opens slowly to the scene. Dis-Equilibrium – The girl is introduced and the characters start to contrast. New-Equilibrium – At the end he is at the studio and the picture of them at the end seems like a resolution.
4. Genre Genre wise we do keep to conventions well. We keep the shots quite long and slow so that it keeps to the flow of the music. We also made sure that we kept it quite natural with little obvious editing. This is quite conventional when making a folk/pop video because it is mostly acoustic with little sound editing. When making a music video about love the most obvious convention is to have a boy and a girl in love or separated in some way. So in our video we do have this convention within the idea of them finding each other in the end.
5. Representation In our video we try to represent the idea of love by having the male and female character to represent each side of the story. Using the representation theory we wanted the viewer to engage with the message in a ‘preferred reader’ way. We wanted the reader to associate and relate to the video and the message of love incorporated in it. Although some readers may take the ‘Negotiated reading’ because of their own views on loves and the trials and tribulation of it.
