2. Introduction to Incorporating Video On
Demand in the Classroom
• What is Video On Demand (VOD)?
– Digitally processed video that can be streamed directly onto a desktop
or laptop without needing to be downloaded or saved first
3. Introduction continued
• Why consider VOD?
– Students learn better when they are engaged; technology engages
them.
– Recent research has shown VOD to have a positive effect on student
achievement
– Knowing that students have grown up surrounded by technology, and
knowing that they are accustomed to extracting information from
visual sources, it makes sense to try to tap that resource in the
schools.
– VOD can be easily incorporated into existing power point programs
– VOD promotes differentiation as students can review material at their
own pace
– Students can create their own VOD, a constructivist student-centered
learning activity
4. Summary of Findings
• Recent quantitative research experiments by Boster, et. al., in
2007 has shown that video on demand (VOD) improved
student achievement on two criterion referenced tests; 12%
over the control group, a .66 standard deviation.
• Recent qualitative research and anecdotal evidence at two
major universities have shown that students confidence in
their learning has increased because they have had access to
VOD as part of their learning experience.
• A large body of past research also supports using VOD in the
classroom
5. Best Source
• Boster, Meyer, Roberto, Lindsay, Smith, Inge, and Strom
completed two replicated quantitative experiments that have
shown positive results that the use of VOD in the classroom
raises student achievement. Experiments were performed in
two separate school districts, one in rural Virginia and the
other in urban Los Angeles.
• Both studies were peer reviewed
6. Impact on Professional Practice
• Because VOD research shows positive impact on
student academic achievement I will:
– Begin to use VOD as part of my instruction
– Explore the possibility of having students create VOD
– Explore SMARTboard™ and bluetooth technology as one
way to incorporate VOD and increase student involvement
during lessons
7. Implications/Further Research
• Because VOD is relatively new, more quantitative research is
needed to determine the level of impact on student high-
stakes test performance
• More research needs to be performed on
urban, suburban, and rural populations of differing ages to
gauge its impact on student achievement, that is, to see if the
positive results heretofore recorded can be generalized to all
populations.
