Human geneticdisorders

 1. 1. Human Genetic Disorders And Pedigrees
 2. 2. Human Genetic Disorders

Cystic Fibrosis – disorder which the body produces thick mucus in the lungs and intestines. Caused by a recessive allele.

Sickle-Cell Disease – affects hemoglobin which carries oxygen in the blood. “Sickle-cells” cause clogging of the blood. A co-dominant Allele.

 3. 3. Genetic Disorders Continued

Hemophilia – sex-linked disorder where a person’s blood clots very slowly or not at all. People with disease do not produce the protein needed for clotting. Caused by recessive allele on X chromosome.

 4. 4. Pedigrees

Geneticists (someone who studies genetics) uses a pedigree to trace the inheritance of traits in humans.

It is a chart or “family tree” that tracks which members of a family have a particular trait.

 5. 5. Pedigree for Albinism
 6. 6. Notation on the Pedigree

A circle represents a female.

A square represents a male.

A completely shaded square or circle indicates the person has the trait.

A not shaded shape indicates that a person neither has the trait or is a carrier.

A half-shaded shape indicates that a person is a carrier.

 7. 7. More on pedigrees.

Square is male, circle is female, shaded has the trait, unshaded doesn’t. Half shaded = carrier.

 8. 8. Queen Victoria’s Family and Hemophilia
 9. 9. Activity “Family Puzzle”

Page 156 in your text.

You will make a “pedigree” for cystic fibrosis within a family.

Use proper symbols.

Read directions carefully.

Remember for a person to have cystic fibrosis they must have two recessive genes. A carrier has one recessive gene.
