FruitBreedomics KOM Stakeholders meeting 31-03-2011 2 EU-Berry presentation
1. The sustainable improvement of European berry production, quality and nutritional value in a changing environment: Strawberries, Currants, Blackberries, Blueberries and Raspberries. Acronym: EUBerry Coordinated by Bruno Mezzeti Duration: 3.5 years (42 months) Starting date: 1 st May 2011 Type of funding scheme: - KBBE.2010.1.2-04: Improving European Berries production, quality, neutraceutical and nutritional value (Strawberries, Currants, Blackberries, Blueberries and Raspberries)
3. CONCEPTS AND OBJECTIVES Concept: Sustainable cropping : growers throughout Europe need cultivars and growing systems that secure high quality fruit grown under environmentally safe and economically viable conditions. WP1 Objectives: To enhance varietal performance in terms of quality and quantity production, and extension of production period through breeding WP2 Objectives: To improve cultivation techniques and develop adaptation strategies to changing climatic conditions, as well as minimizing negative impacts on the environment.
4. CONCEPTS AND OBJECTIVES Concepts: Quality and security : high quality fruits are required both for fresh consumption and processing Health benefits : the importance of the levels and benefits of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds found in these berries should be understood WP3 Objectives: To establish fruit quality, specifically for the fresh market, by including fruit taste, nutraceutical (bioactive), nutritional quality and stability post harvest
5. CONCEPTS AND OBJECTIVES Concepts: Maintaining profitable production in Europe: The improvement of berry culivation efficiency and increased commercial value of the fruit will help in overcoming the labour problems by achieving more efficient production and higher prices by added value. WP4 Objectives: To increase economic competitiveness of berry production and develop a science-based marketing strategy.
6. WP4: COMPETITIVENESS AND MARKETING STRATEGIES WUR To increase economic competitiveness of berry production and develop a science-based marketing strategy
