  • 2. Dictionaries are booksthat list all the words in alanguage.
  • 3. To make dictionarieseasier to use, the wordsare organized inalphabetical order. So touse a dictionary easily,you must know how toalphabetize words.
  • 4. Since there are so manywords in a dictionary,guide words are used tohelp you locate a wordquickly. What are guide words?
  • 5. Guide words are found atthe top of each page. Theytell you the first and lastword that is found on thatpage.
  • 6. How do guide words helpyou find a word quickly?Instead of looking at each wordon a page, which could takeforever, you just look at theguide words and then use whatyou know about alphabetizingwords to decide if your wordwould be found on that page.
  • 7. Let’s see what that means- Let’s pretend we are looking up the word, science. First we would turn to the S section.
  • 8. Then we would use theguide words and what weknow about alphabetizingwords to decide thecorrect page in the Ssection.
  • 9. We would look at theguide words at the top ofeach page and decidebetween which ones ourword would come inalphabetical order.
