Biotechnology Ethics Slideshow Formatting and Grading Criteria
1. Ethics Slideshows
You will be graded based on two aspects.
1. How well you follow and represent the
strategy for values clarification as
outlined in the text and lecture.
(20 points)
2. The formatting of your slide show.
(10 points)
2. Strategy for Values
Clarification
1.Identify and understand the problem or issue. Learn as
much as possible about the issue.
2.List all possible solutions to the issue.
3.Identify the pros and cons of adopting each solution.
Examine the consequences of adopting one solution (or
position) as opposed to another. Consider legal, financial,
medical, personal, social, and environmental aspects.
4.Based on the pros and cons for each solution, rank all
solutions from best to worst.
5.Decide if the problem is important enough to take a
position. If it is, decide what your position is and be
prepared to describe and defend it.
3. Strategy for Values
Clarification
1.Identify and understand the problem or issue. Learn as
much as possible about the issue.
This requires research!
We will use our text and the internet.
4. RESEARCH
As you research online, record FACTS
and OPINIONS.
Facts are needed to understand the problem.
Opinions can include possible solutions and
shed light on the social and political aspects.
BE SURE TO NOTE THE DIFFERENCE!
6. RESEARCH
FACTS
Ultimately, the only reputable sources of
information are peer-reviewed professional
journals or properly audited data bases.
Does the source refer to these?
This is not needed for basic concepts, which
university websites are great for.

OPINIONS
Does the site have a specific point of view? Is
it biased? If so, seek alternate points of
view.
These sites may lead you to verifiable facts,
but any information they contain may be onesided and can not be trusted until verified.
8. RESEARCH
OPINIONS
These sites may help uncover public concerns
about the legal, financial, medical, personal,
social, and environmental aspects of the
problem.
9. RESEARCH
GATHER
Facts, opinions, and images.
Possible solutions (all views)- include legal,
financial, medical, personal, social, and
environmental aspects for each solution.
Include citations for everything you take.
10. RESEARCH
Citations are needed for your internet sources.
Websites• Author and/or editor names (if available)
• Article name in quotation marks (if applicable)
• Title of the Website, project, or book in italics.
• Any version numbers available, including revisions, posting
dates, volumes, or issue numbers.
• Publisher information, including the publisher name and
publishing date.
• Take note of any page numbers (if available).
• Medium of publication (web, blog, tweet).
• Date you accessed the material.
• URL (if required, or for your own personal reference; MLA
does not require a URL).
11. RESEARCH
Citations are needed for your internet sources.
Images• name of the artist
• the title of the work
• the medium of the work
• then follow the citation format for a website
If the work is posted via a username, use that username for
the author.
12. RESEARCH
SAVE TIME
Cut and paste text into a document or a
presentation.
Copy images to your personal desktop, a flash
drive, or your presentation.
Gather all citation information.
13. CREATE A
PRESENTATION
You will be graded based on two aspects.
1. How well you follow and represent the
strategy for values clarification as
outlined in the text and lecture.

14. Apply the Strategy for
Values Clarification
Identify and understand the problem or
issue. Learn as much as possible about
the issue. (6 points)
What are the facts?
Provide a brief overview of the
biotechnology involved that a student in our
class could easily understand.
15. Apply the Strategy for
Values Clarification
List all possible solutions to the issue.
(2 points)
• There should be at least four possible
solutions.
• The more possible solutions the better!
16. Apply the Strategy for
Values Clarification
Identify the pros and cons of adopting each
solution. Examine the consequences of
adopting one solution (or position) as
opposed to another.
Consider legal, financial, medical,
personal, social, and environmental
aspects.
(8 points)
Make one or two slides per solution.
Identify aspects that require further validation.
17. Apply the Strategy for
Values Clarification
Based on the pros and cons for each
solution, rank all solutions from best
to worst.(2 points)
One or two slides should rank the solutions.
Explain why you chose this order, using
specific pros & cons.
If working with a partner, do this for each
individual.
18. Apply the Strategy for
Values Clarification
Decide if the problem is important
enough to take a position.
If it is, decide what your position is and be
prepared to describe and defend it.(2 points)
How important is it that your top solution is
implemented? That your least favorite is not?
Do you care enough to
• educate yourself and others?
• attempt to sway the opinion of others?
• make changes in your life?
19. Slideshow Formatting
• Grammar [2]
• Edit for typos and spelling
• Use complete sentences
• Citations (images & research) [4]
• Number all information sources and images in the order
they appear in your presentation.
• Create a numerical list of works cited (in MLA format)
at the end of your presentation.
20. Slideshow Formatting
• Consistency in writing perspective and formatting[2]
• Consistent use of font, text size, titles, subtitles, and bullets.
• Facts should be presented objectively with a third- person
point of view.
• Personal opinions may be presented in the first person, but
provide appropriate transitions.
21. Slideshow Formatting
• Organization and General Formatting [2]
• The information should be presented in an order that
makes sense.
• Not too many words per slide
• 24pt font should be the minimum.
• Should be easy to read (visually)
