Written for the Museums and the Web 2010 conference, this paper describes the unusual process used to create the Smithsonian's Web and New Media Strategy. The strategy was created through a fast, transparent, public-facing process that included workshops, the Smithsonian 2.0 conference, Twitter, YouTube, and ongoing collaboration through a public wiki. Transparency, openness, and speed were used to overcome obstacles and gather the input of hundreds of people inside and outside the institution.

  • edsonm Michael Edson , Web and New Media Strategy at Smithsonian Institution Thanks Jim!! - - I'm hopeful that we'll make the changes needed to drive the strategy forward! I was thinking on the way in to work this morning that strategy is just about the wind and the tides - - the engine and the huge propeller we need to move this ship forward come from someplace else. Operational maturity? Leadership...? We're finishing up a prototype of the Smithsonian Commons and should have that public in a week or two. Stay tuned!!! 2 years ago Reply
