The workshop in Arusha explored the East African/Tanzanian environment for village energy, local case studies, challenges and opportunities, with a view to formulating policy recommendations for policymakers, funders, NGOs and other stakeholders the region. An important part of the workshop, and indeed the whole Smart Villages initiative work programme, was to gather evidence from existing projects that have provided or facilitated sustainable off-grid energy solutions in the developing world.The workshop gathered more than 50 experts, including policymakers, NGOs, off-grid energy entrepreneurs and others to look for solutions to providing energy to villages off the grid.

Workshop practicals
Construction of this local made wind turbine involves a lot of welding; It
is therefore necessary for villagers to be trained on welding skills.

Blades manufacturing
Blades of this turbine is made of soft wood. Village members have to be
trained in carpentry skills as well to enable them working in this part.
Members of co-operative society are seen keen of learning how to
manufacture turbine blades.

Turbine generator
This turbine generator is of PMG type. Rotor is made of 2 rotating disks
packed with magnets well secured with hypoxic.

Generator stator is made of coiled copper wires. The co-operative have
to work from the scratch to make the coils.

The East Africa Masterclass at Terrat focused on the village level experience of off-grid energy. We have invited local leaders and rural energy providers from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and Tanzania. We were keen for village headmen and headwomen to share their village experiences of energy provision and to tell us about the outcomes and impacts of productive energy use in relation to standards of living, education, heath and employment in the village. The workshop heard from the off grid energy providers about their achievements and challenges in bringing off-grid energy to villages and how they have worked with village leaders and the village community.

Asma Huque, Managing Director, Prokaushali Sangsad Ltd. As part of the series of regional engagements in South Asia, Smart Villages is organising a workshop on off-grid rural energy provision in Bangladesh. The country has the fastest growing programme in the world with an estimated 70,000 solar home systems (SHS) installed per day. More than 3 million SHS have been installed in off-grid rural areas in the country bringing electricity to an estimated 13 million people. The aim of the workshop is to gain insights from the experience of a wide variety of stakeholders in Bangladesh who are involved in rural off-grid energy provision in the country. This workshop will offer a number of potential lessons to other countries within the region. The workshop provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities presented by expansion of solar home systems (SHS) and mini-grids to off-grid rural communities and the challenges faced in this expansion. During this workshop we will also investigate the potential impact of energy access on rural livelihoods in the country. The workshop is being jointly organised by Smart Villages and Practical Action.

Nano fillers play a vital role in increasing the performance of different types of motors. In recent days, nano technology shows a tremendous improvement in the manufacture of high performance electronic devices and circuits, electrical apparatuses and equipment. In this paper, a wide literature survey was done on the filled of nano dielectrics and nano coated motors. Comparison of different nano fillers coated motors was done to show which motor was having superior performance characteristics compared to other motors. Based on the literature survey on the previous research works carried out in the field of applications of nano technology in the coating of nano fillers to the enamel used in the motors. Ball mills are using three phase induction motors for the mechanical operations. Ball mills are used to manufacture the nano powders used for both the nano technology and pyro technology. Industries should be well equipped with safety devices to avoid the fire accidents. Industries should follow the safety norms to avoid the fire accidents. Pyro technology based research centre was located in Sivakasi to understand and motivate the engineers, people to make an interest towards Pyro industries and to train the persons about the safety measures while working with the nano pyro powders used in the nano pyro industries. The powders used here are always in the nano range. But, the people were unaware of this technique. So, this paper will create some knowledge to the people who are working in nano pyro based industries present in Sivakasi. Sivakasi was an industrial city located in South India having more than 15000 nano pyro based industries. So, this paper will educate the engineers, managers and the persons who are all associated with these industries.

They're one of the most attractive models for remote community electrification. They're scalable, and flexible, and capable of supplying power at levels that really permit productive use to be made of the power. But at the same time, they raise alot of questions - what is the most appropriate structure, size, payment system etc for a particular local community. Getting these things wrong has led to systems failing, or not having the development impact they were intended to have. To try to address some of these issues, Energy Action Partners have devised their Minigrid Game. This is a collaborative role-playing game built around a representation of a minigrid system, intended to be used as an educational and collaborative planning tool in designing a community-sized minigrid system. The game is designed to be used within a process that explores minigrid planning and operational decisions. The Minigrid Game is a completely novel way for communities to develop workable solutions to the unique challenges of managing a community minigrid, such as system sizing, tariff-setting, and demand-side management. By playing as a group, the players can also improve their understanding of energy technology, practice negotiation and consensus-building skills, and most importantly, have fun. As a follow-up to this conference, we held two webinars to share highlights from the conference. The first webinar focussed on energy justice. This month, we examined a second theme from the conference, and focused on questions of how academic research can best have impact at the grassroots of energy access and productive use, how that "knowledge gap" can be closed, and what some of the most effective solutions might be for ensuring that research can be applied effectively and equitably. The speakers included Practical Action's Sarah Begg, who has been leading a participatory learning study with LCEDN looking at how academic research impacts the grassroots. She will be joined by her colleague from Practical Action's Bangladesh office, Iffat Khan, who will present some of the specific outcomes and experiences of the study in Bangladesh. Finally, the Smart Villages Initiative will share the global perspectives they have been able to gather on bridging academic research and making it relevant to energy access practitioners, entrepreneurs, and rural communities.
