Isn’t it amazing to see yourself standing in a crowd hailed as one of the most famous author of all time?
People run to you asking a copy of your bestselling book and requesting an autograph. You see your
book in a bookstore appreciated by so many avid readers. You read a good review from a prominent
magazine.
Can you imagine all the fame that comes with being published?
Publishing is not an easy process; however it’s not an impossible one either.
Many aspiring authors who have passion in writing nonfiction books aim to be on top, to be recognized
and to be one of those so-called legendary writers, but they don’t know how to publish their book.
When publishing nonfiction books, look for a publisher that seems “right” for your proposed book.
Evaluate the publisher who can do business with you offering each other’s term. Some book publishing
companies usually demand the grant of rights while there are others who demand more. Hence, before
giving up your rights, make sure that the return will gain merits. Sometimes, having an agent offers great
help in doing the arduous work like negotiating with the publisher about the agreements. However, if
this doesn’t work, you can always resort to self-publishing where everything is adjusted according to
your terms.
Publishers make decisions based on your book proposal and not on finished manuscripts so you have to
persuade them that your book is worth investing for. The book proposal will determine whether your
book is marketable or not. The best approach in preparing a nonfiction proposal is to ask yourself-- not
as a writer but as a reader. Why would I pick this book?
But, how can you make your book phenomenal? How can you withstand against the fierce competition?
A potential publisher will want to know what makes your book different from, or better, than the other
books bringing something new, fresh, out-of-the-universe, and interesting to the table.
If you settle with a so-so book, don’t expect it to soar. Conversely, an exceptional book doesn’t
guarantee that it will take off the shelves.
Always keep in mind that your book fills in the gaps and needs of the market. Don’t be a mediocre. Take
writing as if it’s your last lifeline. So, give your best shot.
