World War I Vocabulary Imperialism--the policy of extending the rule or influence of a country over other countries or colonies. Nationalism--devotion and loyalty to one’s country. Militarism-- a government policy of investing heavily in and strengthening the armed forces
World War I Vocabulary Alliance--an agreement between countries to support one another Triple Alliance– Austria-Hungary, Italy and Germany. Also known as the Central Powers. Triple Entente—Russia, Great Britain and France. Also known as the Allied Powers.
World War I Vocabulary: Trench Warfare-- a style of fighting in which both sides fight from trenches (ditches) Franz Ferdinand– was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. He was killed by a Serbian assassin. His death triggered the start of WWI. Woodrow Wilson– The U.S. President during WWI. He delivered the fourteen points speech to Congress.
World War I Vocabulary Treaty of Versailles--the final peace agreement that ended WWI. It affected Europe by: requiring Germany to take the blame for the war , creating political and economic instability which led to WWII, requiring Germany to pay billions of dollars for war damages.
Causes of World War I Nationalism is devotionand loyalty to one’s country. On your two column notes sheet, write an example of nationalism. Also, once you have written your example, answer the next question on your two column notes sheet.
2.)Why is nationalism a cause of World War I During the Congress of Vienna the map of Europe was redrawn to keep any country from ever becoming powerful enough to threaten Europe again.  This left Germany and Italyas divided states. Strong nationalists wanted their countries to be unified. This led to tension in Europe. By the 1900s, nationalism had grown so strong that countries were willing to go to war to prove their superiority over their rivals.  What is tension?
Causes of World War I Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or influence of a country over other countries or colonies.  Countries wanted to own as much land as possible. Land was representative of a country’s power or superiority. Answer the next question on your two column notes sheet.
4.) Why is imperialism a cause of World War I? Imperialism was a cause of World War 1 because countries had become so focused on owning  land or colonies that they developed a strong sense of competition with other countries.
Causes of World War I Militarism is a government policy of investing heavily in and strengthening the armed forces.
Why is militarism a cause of World War I? Competition between European countries for land, resources and power drove many countries to strengthen their armed forces. They built powerful armies and created stockpiles of new weapons. Answer the question below on your two column notes
Causes of World War I Alliances are agreements between countries to support one another. As tensions and suspensions grew, European leaders hoped to protect their countries by creating alliances.  Triple Alliance included: Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. It was also known as the Central Powers. Triple Entente included: Great Britain, France and Russia. It was also known as the Allied Powers.
Exit Pass On a separate sheet of paper answer the following question: Which cause of World War I do you feel was the most important? Explain!
