Vaadin is quickly popularizing Java framework for developing rich and interactive server-driven web applications. Vaadin is built around core Servlet and Google Web Toolkit (GWT) technologies and it strives to developer productivity by providing large library of components and ready made functionality that hides the hard parts of web development allowing developers to concentrate to the real business problem at hand. During this session we’ll cover the basics of building Vaadin based web applications: layouting, data binding, application deployment and Vaadin Touckit integration for mobile devices. Attending the speech does not require thorough understanding of web technologies in general, session will include demonstration and live coding.
Action-Domain-Responder: A Web-Specific Refinement of Model-View-ControllerPaul Jones
Using Model-View-Controller as a pattern to describe stateless HTTP interactions has always been a bit of a kludge. There simply hasn't been a better pattern web applications -- until now.
ADR (Action-Domain-Responder) represents a refinement of generic MVC as an application architecture specifically tuned to the web. In this talk, we will discuss various patterns of overall application architecture, including MVC, MVP, PAC, DCI, RMR, and others. We will find out how the ADR pattern arises from generic MVC, and how it provides a better description of how web applications actually work. Finally, we will go over examples of how to architect an ADR application, as well as how to convert from an MVC architcture to an ADR one.
Which ORM (Object-relational mapping) library should I use? What should I use for my template language? Should I use MVC (Model/View/Controller) or some other pattern? What unit testing framework should I use? What database engine should I use?
Unfortunately, these questions make it difficult to start web projects. Therefore, Ruby on Rails has made all of these decisions already; you can just get started. And it's extensible enough that if one of the default choices doesn't work for you, just choose a different library. How does Ruby on Rails answer these questions? How does it use the Ruby language to help make your development even faster? Come and find out!
There are lots of libraries and frameworks you can use when building browser based JavaScript applications. Probably the most popular library is jQuery. But while jQuery makes it easy to write cross browser user interface code that manipulates the DOM it’s UI focus makes it less then perfect for large business applications. One of the JavaScript based MVC frameworks that has been gaining a lot of popularity for creating business applications is AngularJS. Wen using AngularJS you get the benefit of a powerful data-binding framework that guides you towards a proper application model with a proper separation between the UI layer and the business layer. It also contains a powerful dependency injection framework making code much more testable than before.
In this session Maurice de Beijer will show you how to get started with AngularJS and how productive you can be when creating line of business applications.
Architectural Patterns and Software Architectures: Client-Server, Multi-Tier,...Svetlin Nakov
Few days ago I gave a talk about software architectures. My goal was to explain as easy as possible the main ideas behind the most popular software architectures like the client-server model, the 3-tier and multi-tier layered models, the idea behind SOA architecture and cloud computing, and few widely used architectural patterns like MVC (Model-View-Controller), MVP (Model-View-Presenter), PAC (Presentation Abstraction Control), MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel). In my talk I explain that MVC, MVP and MVVM are not necessary bound to any particular architectural model like client-server, 3-tier of SOA. MVC, MVP and MVVM are architectural principles applicable when we need to separate the presentation (UI), the data model and the presentation logic.
Additionally I made an overview of the popular architectural principals IoC (Inversion of Control) and DI (Dependency Injection) and give examples how to build your own Inversion of Control (IoC) container.

A discussion on Model-View family of frameworks (MVC, MVP and MVVM).
They were all created to solve the same problem, namely solve the problem of code separation in UI. Coincidently, while they were all designed to do this, they all fail in the same ways.
I've compiled here a few of the bad practices I've seen over the years in various projects, the ways they affect your code quality and ways to avoid or fix them.
I hope you'll find this useful :)
Influencing Business using a Wall of KnowledgeHeidi Munc
Large corporations today typically understand that a user experience practice is necessary to obtain insights about users needs, wants and desires. But what is the best way to communicate those insights in order to influence the project direction?
Learn how Nationwide uses their Wall of Knowledge to illustrate current design problems, the problem's impact to the user, and suggest possible solutions in a way that influences the way business teams think about the project.
The process of creating a Wall of Knowledge invites discussion, getting stakeholders to come together and move around a physical space. It organizes large amounts of data in an easily digestible way, and encourages business partners to approach the problem from a different perspective.
Creating a Wall of Knowledge invites collaboration and debate. The end result is a communally created story, agreed upon by all of the stakeholders, that clearly illustrates the project's next steps.

MV* presentation frameworks in Javascript: en garde, pret, allez!Roberto Messora
HTML5 is the playing area, the strip, Javascript presentation frameworks are the fences and they are fierce and proud. In this presentation we will attend an interesting match between two of the emerging contenders in the MV* family: KnockoutJS and BackboneJS. We'll try to understand how they solve the same issues in modern web software development to better decide which one is suitable in our scenario.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
