Sample answer using Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry: The novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is set in 1933 in Mississippi. There were some people who lived in that place and time who were openly racist, treating African-Americans practically like animals. Some people even went as far as to commit acts of violence against innocent people just because of their race. In ROT, the Wallaces killed one man and set another on fire just because they knew that they could get away with it. Justice was rarely, if ever, served in cases of white-on-black violence. The conflict that occurs in ROT, that the Logan family decides to protest against the Wallaces by boycotting their store, brings out the worst in the locals who felt compelled to support the Wallaces. Caleb Wallace got his friends to go along with getting Mrs. Logan fired from her job as a teacher at the all-black school, which would go on to cause a great deal of difficulty for the family, who was struggling to keep their land to begin with. The banker in town, in support of the murdering Wallaces, called in the balance of their mortgage, because he believed they wouldn’t be able to pay it and the land could be sold back to Harlan Granger, the original owner.
