Slavery Began in the early 1400s Most slaves came from Africa The first slaves were brought to Portugal from northern Mauritania Slaves were forced to do whatever the owner told them to do They would be punished severely if they were caught escaping Rules that slaves must obey are the fact that slaves must please the owner and always ask permission before doing anything
Slavery It is related to To Kill A Mockingbird as there were racial discrimination against the blacks Blacks are always at fault
The Civil War Southern states includes: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina  Abraham Lincoln proclaimed war against the South, in order to stop slavery. The war started in 1861 and ended in 1865  
The Civil War It abolished slavery as a legal institution in the United States This relates to the novel as it shows that both the blacks and the whites have equal rights
Jim Crow Laws Jim Crow is not actually a person It is a song Blacks were unhappy as they were treated unfairly It separated the blacks and the whites This gave an advantage to the whites
The Civil Rights Movement Started in 1950 political movement for equality before the law  Chicano Movement sought political empowerment and social inclusion for Mexican-Americans around a generally nationalist argument Black Power  argued for black self-determination, and asserted that the assimilation inherent in integration robs Africans of their common heritage and dignity President John F Kennedy supported the civil rights movement Lead to improvements in the legal rights of previously oppressed groups of peoples It relates to the novel where Atticus fights for Tom Robison's case
Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro trials  An African American woman, was arrested for refusing to surrender her seat to a white person For Scottsboro trails, 9 teenaged boys were accused of rape in Jackson Country, Alabama  Similar to the novel as both these teenaged boys and in the novel, Tom Robinson, was accused of rape
Traits of a true Southern Belle and Southern Gentlemen A true southern belle must have proper etiquette, penmanship and ballroom dancingA true southern gentleman must be well educated and must have respect In the novel, Atticus is a gentlemen as he is polite and he reads In the novel, Bob Ewell is not a gentlemen as he very cunning and violent.
Harper Lee Born on 28 April 1926 in Alabama Studied in the university of Alabama Novels written by her to Kill a Mockingbird, "Love—In Other Words, "Christmas to Me“, "When Children Discover America”, "Romance and High Adventure”  Awarded 1960 Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird The plot and characters are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbours, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old
