2. •What is a spiritual gift? The God-given ability of a believer to function as
member of the body of Christ. “Gift” comes from the Greek charisma.
Charisma comes from charis, which we translate “Grace”.
•These are the main sections of the Bible dedicated to Gifts of
the Spirit.
Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 27-31; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Peter 4:10-11
•What is the purpose of spiritual gifts? To equip the saints for ministry,
to build the church, and to make it grow as each member serves one another
in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
(Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Peter 4:10-11).
3. • Evangelism: The task of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with
unbelievers (Ephesians 4:11; 2 Timothy 4:5). Every Christians
has a responsibility to evangelize (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).
This is not a specific spiritual gift but a ministry given to all
believers (2 Corinthians 5:18). God has gifted certain individuals
to do the office of an evangelist (Ephesians 4:11; Acts 21:8).
• Prophecy: To speak the truth of Scripture in public. Does not
necessarily imply a foretelling of the future or adding revelation
to Scripture. Should be used in proportion to your faith
(Romans 12:6). Preaching implies prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10;
1 Thessalonians 5:20; 2 Peter 1:20).
• Teaching: Closely related to prophecy but different (1
Corinthians 12:29; Romans 12:6-7). A teacher tends to interpret
Scripture and put it in doctrinal and systematic form. A preacher
must be able to teach (1 Timothy 3:2; 5:17; Titus 1:9; Ephesians
4:11).
4. • Exhortation: Closely related to prophecy and teaching and
required for preaching (2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 2:15; Acts 2:40). It
is a separate gift (Romans 12:8). Therefore, a person may
exhort without preaching or teaching (e.g. counseling,
encouraging, motivating, giving godly advice).
• Pastor / Shepherd: An office of the church (Acts 14:23;
Ephesians 4:11). This is an elder who meets the qualifications of
1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. An overseer or bishop is the
title given in Scripture to the elders who fulfilled this role.
Pastor refers to the work he does as if shepherding a flock, i.e.
taking care of and leading the church (John 21:16; 1 Peter 5:1-3;
Acts 20:28).
• Administration: Closely related to serving. Administrating
gifts are given to some in the church to help lead the church (1
Corinthians 12:28). Administration includes the ability to
organize people, things, information, finances, etc.
5. • Serving: People uniquely gifted to help and serve others
(Romans 12:7; 1 Corinthians 12:28). Some with this gift may
qualify for the office of Deacon (Acts 6:1-6; 1 Timothy 3:8-13).
All gifts should be used to serve others (1 Peter 4:10-11).
• Giving: Closely related to serving, and mercy (Romans 12:8).
Some churches were known for their giving (2 Corinthians 8:3-7).
Usually refers to sacrificial giving (Hebrews 13:16), i.e. not giving
of excess.
• Showing Mercy: Those gifted in this area demonstrate mercy
to others with cheerfulness (Romans 12:8). Closely related to
exhortation and giving. While some are uniquely gifted with
mercy, the gospel is a ministry of mercy (Jude 1:21-23; 1 Peter
2:10; 2 Corinthians 4:1) and all Christians should demonstrate it.
However, some have the gift to demonstrate deep concern and
be able to identify areas of need in a special way.
