1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Primary is a collection of data
collected by the researcher.
Primary data can also be
collected from questionnaires
and market research.
Great control enables the
researcher to have higher
control over the information
collected. Researcher can
direct his focus on both
qualitative and quantitative
issues.
Primary research can be very
expensive. It takes longer to
undertake primary research
than to acquire secondary
data. By the time the
researcher is complete it may
be out of date. Low response
rate has to be expected.
Secondary
Secondary research is data
collected by someone else
other than the researcher.
This data can be collected
through government records,
books, associations.
The data collected from
secondary research gives an
idea to organize about how
effective the primary research
is. It is time and cost effective
it takes less time to process
data than what the primary
research would have.
Some of the secondary data
may be copyrighted and thus
not using them without
permission can lead to legal
complications/complaints.
The inaccuracy of the data
may be an issue as you are
not gathering your own
information you can be totally
dependent on someone else’s
data.
Quantitative
Quantitative research creates
statistical data to explain
events. For example you
would ask people for their
opinion on a product,
company about their image
and their thought on it.
Quantitative research enables
the researcher to analyse data.
With this you can also you
quantitative research for
hypothesises in experiments
as you are using statistics.
The disadvantages of
quantitative research would
have to be that you have to
get a larger sample of data to
make your results more
statistically accurate. Also
that the context of the study
can be ignored.
Qualitative
Qualitative research is
complete with detailed
descriptions of events. For
example observation, artefact
and interviewing focus
The advantages of qualitative
research are that the
researcher can early on know
what they are exactly going to
focus on. Also there is no need
The disadvantages of the
qualitative research would be
that it is very time consuming
as it can take months and
even years. The researcher

can also be biased in there
data/research.
What research methods did you use when completing the assignments in year 11
(Unit 18 Advertising and Unit 21 Media Project? (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative,
quantitative)
For unit 18 I would have use volvic for research what adverts they would have
used. Secondary research would have been adverts and information on volvic.
For quantitative I would have used it for our presentation and this is where other
people would have marked it. The was no qualitative research.
For Unit 21 We didn’t do any primary research but for secondary research we
would have used other photos of light photography I would have used YouTube
videos and I would have also used blog article to get ideas.
Quantitative research would have been unit 4 on unit 21 and Qualitative research
we didn’t use.
3. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research techniques did you use when completing the assignments in year 11
(Unit 18 Advertising and Unit 21 Media Project? (e.g. using the library, the internet,
watching videos, reading info, recces, practises, plans etc)
For unit 18 I used photos information.
For this I used the internet to look at blogs I wanted to use I also used YouTube
and pictures to help me and to get ideas.
How did you collate, store and use the information trail for Units 18 and 21? (e.g. did
you book mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info
for your folders?)
For unit 18 I used photos and Wikipedia to help me look for ideas and what our
advert and our label were going to look like. For the websites I used outdoor
photography magazine and for this I have used the blog articles on this website
to recreate my own.
4. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
How and why might you use the four research methods in a real life situation? For
example if you worked for the BBC and were tasked with creating a new reality TV
show how might you use the four research methods to help?
For the first thing you would use primary research to help make a questionnaire
for what people would like to see in the TV show secondary would help as we
would use other shows to help us get ideas on what it will be like. We could use
quantitative research to help use get real statistics for the show and also we
could get peoples thoughts on what is good and what is bad. Qualitative would
help with making a show as we could use it to get description in the show to
make it seem more realistic.
