As of 2014, homelessness in San Diego County had
decreased slightly from the year prior to a total
number of 8,506 persons (a four percent
improvement). Of this number, 3,985 were
unsheltered and 4,521, sheltered, according to the
Regional Task Force On The Homeless.
3. Sheltered homelessness refers to the state of
living in emergency shelters and transitional
housing; unsheltered homeless individuals
reside in places not intended for habitation,
like parks and sidewalks.
Of the unsheltered individuals, the
population is predominantly male: 17
percent are veterans and a third possess
some form of college experience; many of
the individuals suffer from substance abuse
or a severe mental disorder.
