This document provides an outline for a training on action research for English teachers. It discusses what research and action research are, how to develop an action research, collect and analyze data, and write an action research report. Research is defined as a scholarly investigation that studies something thoroughly using a scientific method. Action research is a process of systematic reflection, inquiry and action carried out by individuals to understand, evaluate and improve an educational practice. It is different from other research in its practical nature, focus on change, use of a cyclical process, and concern with participation.

9. Action Research
• “Action research is a process of systematic reflection,
enquiry and action carried out by individuals about
their own professional practice” (Frost, 2002, p. 25).
• “Educational action research is an enquiry which is
carried out in order to understand, to evaluate and
then to change, in order to improve some educational
practice’ (Bassey, 1998, p. 93).

10. How is AR different from
other research?
Denscombe (1998) suggests four characteristics:
1. its practical nature;
2. its focus on change;
3. the involvement of a cyclical process;
4. its concern with participation.
