4. Increasing
complexity!
Type A Fixed-speed rotor, no power
converter - the “Danish model”.
Type B Slightly variable speed rotor,
no power converter – the
“advanced Danish model”.
Type C Variable speed rotor, doubly-
fed induction generators (DFIG)
with a partially-rated power
converter (around 30% of rated
power)
Type D Variable speed, direct drive,
and full-scale power converter with
either electromagnet or permanent
magnet electricity generators.

6. Other trends
Wind energy technology
• (Slow) replacement of meteorology masts with sensors such as LIDAR
and SODAR, currently more expensive but increasingly competitive at
the height of modern wind turbines and with much better mobility.
• Offshore turbines towards direct drive (SWT-6.0-154, Haliade 150),
although the DFIG 6.2M and the MS G132-5.0, M5000/135, V164-8.0
will also be representative
• New vessels: larger & larger
• Larger rotors for low-wind: stronger gearbox, hub and control system.
• Longer O&M contracts with OEM
