2. What are Household Estimates?
• Provide an estimate of the number of households by
type, they are not forecasts.
• Calculated based on assumptions about:
- Births
- Deaths
- Migration
- Household formation rates
• They are based on the mid-year 2017 population
estimates.

3. Household Definitions
Household Definition: One person living alone, or a group of
people (not necessarily related) living at the same address
who share cooking facilities and share a living room or sitting
room or dining area.
This includes Sheltered Accommodation and people living in
caravans on any type of site that is their usual residence.

4. • In total there are 12 household types, these can be
simplified into 5 categories.
• 1-person households
• 2-person households
• 3-person households
• 4-person households
• 5+ person households
Household Types Part 1

5. The household types are
defined by the people who
live within them; for example
a 2-adult household with one
child would be called a 3-
person household.
Household Types Part 2
The number of individuals living in certain
households is taken and the population
estimates are applied to determine the
number of residents in those households
during the period of mid-year 2016 to 2017.

increases were in the
Vale of Glamorgan
(1.7 per cent) and
Newport (1.4 per cent).
• Ceredigion was the
only local authority to
show a decrease (0.3
per cent).
