2. We need our learners to feel like superheroes. That it is their duty to care about the world and want to learn math, science, languages, writing, reading not to take a test…
3. But because by obtaining these skills along their hero journeys they will be able to find cures, get closer to living in a peaceful world, solve world issues like hunger, poverty, illiteracy, etc!
4. Our world needs not one superhero but a league of superheroes! And the only way that we will raise heroes is if we, their teachers, impart to them this mission and let them know we believe that each one of them has the ability and strength to be a hero and if they just choose to go on the mission and learn the skills they will succeed. Some of our students never hear adults or their everyday heroes they look up to tell them they have the ability to live meaningful lives and so they choose other things like drugs, crime, money, fame, and other things that hurt others.
5. See you are not just a teacher. You have the ability to be a hero and model and guide students to be heroes. What makes a hero isn’t extraordinary talents. In fact, if you think of some of your favorite superheroes- Spiderman, Ironman, Luke Skywalker, Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou, Oprah, etc.- many were living ordinary lives until they were called to the mission. Many have resisted but eventually they made the choice. And that is the difference. It is up to you to be brave enough to make the difficult but very meaningful choice. And Sylvia and I want to tell you that you have the skills, talents, and strength to do this.
6. But to accomplish your mission you have to complete the hero journey. All heroes- Buddha, Jesus, Krishna- according to the mythologist Joseph Campbell, go through a similar journey of 17 stages to accomplish their heroic deeds that help improve their communities and the world. Campbell describes what people call the monomyth in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). Many writers and producers like George Lucas have their heroes go through this journey. They adapt it into 13 stages and Sylvia and I have as well. Sylvia will walk you through the graphics she produced so you get a general understanding then we will share our personal heroic journeys and struggles and share how we manage to continue carrying on with our mission even during the toughest challenges.
7. You have already gone through the first stage and passed which is choosing to answer The Call to Adventure. Understand that by being here you are special. You are the 1 teacher in your school, city, and possibly country hearing this call. This isn’t the first time you’ve heard it. When you first decided to be a teacher, something inside you and beyond you called you to this mission and you chose it. We know it’s a very difficult journey and we congratulate you for being here.
