WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?
Autism spectrum disorders are lifelong developmental
disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social
interaction , impaired communication, restricted and
repetitive interests and behaviours and sensory
sensitivities (1).
CAUSE OF AUTISM
 Basically the cause of autism is unknown
 The disability results from abnormalities in brain
structure or function and underlying cause usually
cannot be identified as yet , through research is on
the rise (2).
AUTISM SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
 Signs of autism may appear during infancy and the
disorder is usually diagnosed by the age of one
year , though some times the childs development
appears normal until about 2 years old and then
regresses rapidly.
 Symptoms of autism occur in various combinations
, from mild to severe(3).
INFANTS WITH AUTISM
 Displays abnormal reactions to sensory stimuli
 Touches may be experienced as painful
 Smells may be overwhemlingly unpleasant
 Everyday noises may be painful
 Bright lights and loud noises such as a vacuum
cleaner may cause crying
 Appears indifferent to surroundings
 Appears content to be alone, happier to play alone
 Displays lack of response to others (4).
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Autistic
children’s
relationships
with their
family
members
and peers
range from
in difference
to others ,
though we
must not
assume that
all children
with autism
dislike social
interactions
as some
do(5).
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR AUTISM
 Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) will
benefit from Ayurveda & yoga since they address
both the physical and emotional symptoms. Autism
is the end result of gross imbalance of Vata element
and particularly Prana Vata which is seated in the
mind controlling all mental functions such as
speech, concentration, memory, learning and
neurological response. OmniCept is an promising
ayurvedic formula for autism(6).
AYURVEDA
 The classical Ayurvedic treatment gives promising
results in autistic children.
 However there are several practical hurdles in the
Ayurvedic treatment such as (i) many Ayurvedic
ingredients are not scientifically verified and some
preparations are not palatable, (ii) the therapies
need hospitalization of 3-4 weeks and some of the
methods generate temporary fatigue, (iii) strict
adherence to sensible Ayurvedic diet is a must for
lasting relief and, (iv) many children are on anti-epileptics
(e.g. Carbamazepine) or anti-psychotics
(e.g. risperidone) which show poor response to
Ayurvedic treatment(7).
Ayurvedic protocol includes :
1. Dosha balancing especially Agni element.
2. Purification and rejuvenation of dhatus.
3. Administration of scientifically verified Medhya
Rasayana,
4. Sensible Ayurvedic diet and Yogic support. and 5.
Adjuvant supportive therapy based on Multi-
Dimensional approach (8).
ASD AND ADHD
 The most common misunderstandings with autism
and ADHD are based around interpretation of
wording ,for example, impairment in communication
and social interaction or repetitive patterns of
behaviour or interests(9).
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASD AND ADHD
ASD ADHD
 Social interaction:
has no great desire to
social .
o Repetitive patterns of
behaviour or interests:
repetitive patterns of
behaviour often serve no
function.
o Communication:
no attempt to use gestures.
 Social interaction:
Wants to be social. Feels
sadness and confusion over
isolation.
o Repetitive patterns of behaviour
or interests:
do not usually have repetitive
patterns of behaviour other than
perhaps a routine that has been
put in place but independence
does not rely on these.
o Communication:
Will use gestures for
communicating(9).
