Julia was born June 11, 1815 in Calcutta, India. At age 48 she
got a camera from her daughter and son in-law as a birthday gift. She enjoyed
taking pictures of women who she would have dressed in elaborate costumes,
sometimes representing historical figures. Her work continues to interest
photography students and students of Victorian England.

Nilsson’s father and uncle were both photographers and his
father gave him his first camera at age 12. He began his career in the mid
1940s doing freelance photography. Throughout his life he was given multiple
awards for his pictures or studies, he is considered one of the first
photographers to take this clear of pictures of embryos because it is a very
difficult thing to do.

From a young age fashion was a huge part of Avedon’s life, his
mother owned a dress manufacturing business and his father started a dress
business on Fifth Avenue called Avedon’s Fifth Avenue. In 1973 Avedon
became the lead photographer for Vogue, he shot most of the cover photos
until late 1988.
