Good morning everyone. My talk is looking specifically at Penn and Civic engagement

Results in community protests, Penn seen as a bully. During Meyerson’s presidency, conflicts regarding expansion projects demolition of 3400 blocks of Walnut and Samson Streets
Hackney wanted a collaborative and participative program in which administrators, professors , and students could work with local institutions to do applied research on social and economic problems. Ira Harkavy and Lee Benson led this effort. WEPIC - Four undergraduates in a History seminar on “Urban University-Community Relationships” taught by President Hackney and Professors Lee Benson and Ira Harkavy propose the development of a West Philadelphia youth corps using existing agencies…West Philadelphia Improvement Corps (WEPIC) established Public schools can serve as catalytic centers for community improvement activities. Schools can serve, educate, involve, and activate all members of the community. Youth can serve as change agents for the community. The process of building community schools serves as a vital step in revitalizing neighborhoods and improving public education during the school and the extended school day.
A third way is Community Capacity Building Programs Such as the Program to Bridge the Digital Divide gap
One of the tools the center relies on to promote civic engagement on campus and off is ABCS 1991 – four ABCS courses offered with three faculty and 100 students 2007 - 150 ABCS courses connect 1,500+ Penn graduate and undergraduate students and faculty with the community ABCS are rooted in service and intrinsically linked to teaching and research. ABCS Encompasses problem-oriented research and teaching and service learning emphasizing student and faculty reflection on the service experience. Aims to bring about structural community improvement including effective public schools, neighborhood development, and community organizations. Reaffirms founder Ben Franklin’s belief that: “The great Aim and End of all Learning…” is service to society.
There are also 20 Philadelphia public schools working with CCP’s UNI program.
Access Science 30 partner teachers across 7 schools; 35 undergraduate and 7 graduate fellows America Reads/America Counts 85 work-study & 24 ABCS/volunteer tutors in classrooms and after school across 3 schools College Access & Career Pathways 50 high school students receiving Philadelphia YouthWorks stipends; additional 100 involved first full time coordinator Mural Arts Program 45 high school students involved Community School Family Nights nearly 400 participants across 4 schools each week Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program at Sayre High School K-16+ curricula focus, involving hundreds of high school and university students Penn interdisciplinary collaboration Sayre Beacon Program 85 after school students involved daily (K-8) 120 community children in Beacon Pride Summer Camp (K-8) Urban Nutrition Initiative 20 schools throughout District .
Programs from CCP, Civic House, Penn Nursing, Penn Dental, Penn Medicine and Bridging the Gap Public Health Internships, Wharton Management 100, Penn Engineering, Penn Law Public Service, Penn Social Policy and Practice, Penn Graduate School of Education, and Fox Leadership (Big Brothers, Big Sisters) Total of 253 program listings Yielded a total of ~5000 Penn students in West Philadelphia each week 4600 Penn students in West Philadelphia, beyond campus boundaries 4000 Penn students in West Philadelphia, beyond Penn Division of Public Safety’s Patrol Zone (30th to 43rd Streets, Baltimore Avenue to Market Street) West Philadelphia partner sites, beyond campus boundaries, with most concentrated activity: Red (201-317 students per week) Sayre High School 58th and Walnut Streets Orange (101-200 students per week) Shaw Middle School 54th St. and Warrington Ave. Penn Alexander School 4209 Spruce Street Alexander Wilson School 4624-26 Woodland Avenue Lea School 47th and Locust Streets Powell School 36th and Powelton Streets Drew School 38th and Powelton Streets Philadelphia School of the Future 4201 Parkside Ave. Most blue dots (51-100 students per week), particularly those in zip code 19131, represent Penn School of Dental Medicine’s PennSmiles Van sites, with a roughly estimated 52 Dental students visiting each partner location. CCP Plays a crucial role in Penn’s development in West Philadelphia – working with the Spruce Hill community to create the Spruce Hill Community Plan. CCP prepares a number of white papers for the universities on strategies for engagement and partnerships. launched the Penn Compact, her vision for making Penn both a global leader in teaching, research, and professional practice, and a dynamic agent of social, economic, and civic progress. Civic House is the University of Pennsylvania's hub for student-led community service and social advocacy work The following is an excerpt from the Charter: Civic House, the most recent example of the University’s deep interest in service to the community, will promote service as a means of preparing students for their roles as citizens and leaders. In support of its mission, Civic House assists and administers service projects, offers opportunities to combine action with reflection and analysis, and encourages productive collaboration between the University and Philadelphia’s community organizations.
As the work continues there are still issues that need continued address. and modified Lucien E. Blackwell Apprenticeship Program Provides construction skills training opportunities to residents from West and Southwest Philadelphia Robust recruitment effort underway Skills Development Center (SDC) An employer-driven program that provides individuals comprehensive employment connections, including career coaching, and other academic and social supports. The SDC is currently working with nearly 500 incumbent employees from across the Penn Health System
Sayre Health Center Provides high quality, culturally-sensitive, accessible care to the underserved residents who live in the surrounding neighborhood Health and professional education center for high school students as well as graduate and undergraduate students from several schools and programs at Penn. Penn Nursing’s Living Independently for Elders LIFE program provides nearly 300 West Philadelphia seniors with comprehensive nursing and medical care. Penn Smiles Dental Van The van delivers oral health education, dental screenings and treatment to neighborhood children and their parents.

Penn’s Graduate School of Education University (GSE) Assisted PreK-8 public school Penn Assisted School – with School District (SD) operate the Penn Alexander School; serves 500 students from K-8 Education management contracts with SD for two elementary schools in West Philadelphia. Penn faculty, students and staff work with more than 20 West Philadelphia Public schools
