Drones - or unmanned vehicles - are quickly evolving into a multi-billion dollar industry. This is a nice overview of the unmanned aerial type along with an overview of a project to get people with disabilities engaged in this technology for both fun and career.
2. Mission
Drones2Disabled BluAngels is a community project to educationally
benefit 16-18 year old teens with spinal cord injuries by connecting
and empowering them to be Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Certified
Pilots. Its’ purpose is to raise funds, connect, empower, and educate
teens with spinal cord injuries so that they too can FLY. Thus,
making a difference in their lives and making their life, a life they
love to live.

• What is so, right now?
• What is the predictable future if no
action is taken?
• What can the future be for people
with disabilities?

• What is so, right now?
• What is the predictable
future if no action is taken?
• What can the future be for
people with SCI?
Occurrence
•FAA predicts 10,000 Unmanned Aircraft Systems could be
airborne in the U.S. skies by 2020.
•FAA rule making began in 2011
•U.S. Congress requiring the FAA to have developed UAV rules
by September 2015
•FAA currently has six research/test sites operating in Alaska,
Nevada, North Dakota, New York, Texas, and Virginia.
•FAA is currently granting 333 exemptions & Certificates of
Authorization to individuals and companies on a case by case
basis as part of their research for developing rules for drone
use in commerce.
•Occurrence:
• It occurs for me the FAA will follow similar processes to
certification in their rule making as they have done with airman
certificates.
•Regulations are needed in the name of Safety & Innovation.
•Regulations should not regulate out people with SCI.
Regulations should include people with SCI.
•By creating awareness now, specifically before the public
comment opportunity, there is a real possibility the future for
people with SCI can be part of the drone community and
become Cinematographers, Aerial Traffic Reporters, Package
Delivery Specialist, Search & Rescue Providers for Police/Fire,
etc.
8. Drone Community
The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International is the
world's largest non-profit organization devoted exclusively to advancing
the unmanned systems and robotics community. Serving more than
7,500 members from government organizations, industry and
academia, AUVSI is committed to fostering, developing, and promoting
unmanned systems and robotic technologies. AUVSI members support
defense, civil and commercial sectors.
MissionStatement
Advancing the unmanned systems and robotics community through
education, advocacy and leadership.
Local Chapter – Heartland Chapter
9. Drone Community
The Chicago Area Drone User Group(CHI DUG) is
an organization for amateur and professional
drone users that seeks to promote the
responsible use of flying robots for community
service, artistic, entrepreneurial and recreational
purposes. All experience levels are welcome. We
get together as a community to share tips,
experiences, and of course to do some flying. We
work to educate ourselves about how to build and
use drones in a safe and respectful manner and to
educate the public about the positive role aerial
robotics can play in our society. Most importantly,
we think that flying robots are a lot of fun! CHI
DUG is a member of the Drone User Group
Network, an association of community
organizations that promote the use of civilian
drone technology for the benefit of humanity.
13. Unmanned Aircraft Systems
• Unmanned Aircraft
• Control System
• Control Link
• Other Ground Related Support
14. Basic Technical Components of a Quad
Copter Drone
• Essentials
• RC Transmitter
• Multi Rotor Frame
• Motors / Speed Controller
• Propellers
• Flight Controller
• Battery & Charger
• Options
• Battery Alarm
• Flight Controller Add-ons
• Camera Gimbal
• Telemetry
• Wireless Video
15. RC Transmitter
• Controls Aircraft
• Sends signals to motors
• Sends signals to servos
• Multi-Channels for
controlling functions such
as cameras, landing gear,
parachutes, etc.
• 90% Use 2.4 Ghz band.
Unique Factory Set ID
Codes Avoids Signal
Conflicts
18. Motors / Speed Controller
• Direct Current (DC)
• Majority are Brushless
• Kv = RPM @1 Volt with
zero load
• Battery voltage and
overall weight of drone
determine motor size
and Kv rating.
• Electronic Speed Control
(ESC)
• A component that varies
(and potentially brakes)
the rotational speed of, or
changes to the direction
of the shaft of an electric
motor.
• A UAV typically includes
one ESC for each electric
motor.
19. Propellers
• Array of Materials
• Cheaper is less precise
• Expensive is more
precise and adds to
stabilization.
• Three Measurements
• Length
• Pitch
• Bore
• Small – Greater Speed
• Larger – Stability
• Greater pitch – Higher
Thrust, Larger Motor
• Lower pitch – More
efficient
20. Flight Controller
• Small Circuit Board
Varying in complexity
• Directs RPM to each
motor in response to
input
• Employ sensors for
gyroscopes, barometers,
GPS, and failsafe features
• Configurable /
Programmable
21. Battery & Charger
• Industry standard is
lithium-ion polymer
(LiPo) batteries
• Lightweight & Compact
• Three Specification
Considerations
• Voltage
• Wired as Series or Parallel
• Capacity
• Chargers –
Single/Multiple
• Straight/Balanced
22. Options
• Battery Alarm
• Flight Controller Add-ons
• Camera Gimbals

Mission
BACKBONES exists to provide free support for people with spinal cord injury and their families.
Through our network we facilitate telephone, in-person, or web-based connections and encourage
growth by the sharing of experiences and ideas. As a host to events, BACKBONES creates an inviting
atmosphere where people can ask questions, learn from each other informally, and make lasting
friendships.
BACKBONES is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
BACKBONES has committed to being the Fiscal Sponsor for this Community Project
