These are the slides for a basic chemistry video (available at the end of the slides), aimed to meet the GCSE (high school grade 9/10) requirements in:
- Unit 1 Chemistry
- Science A Unit 2.
All substances are made of atoms. A substance that is made up of only one sort of atom is called an element. There are over 100 different elements.
Atoms of each element are represented by using a chemical symbol. For example, C represents carbon, O represents oxygen, and Al represents aluminium.
You can turn the subtitles / captions on and off in the video as you please, using the button in the bottom right hand corner.

Editor's Notes
The world around us is made up of lots of different substances. And those substances are made up of lots of really small particles call atoms.
Atoms are so small that there’s no way you can physically see one with your eye. In fact, there are millions of atoms at the tip of a single threading needle.
Substances that are made up of 1 type of atom are called elements.
Substances that are made up of different atoms are called compounds
Chemical elements can be represented by pictures like these – which we’ll explain in more detail in upcoming videos, or through symbols. Hydrogen for example can be represented by a H. Similarly carbon can be represented by a C. Aluminium can be represented by the two letters Al.
There are over 100 different elements in the world. Some of them are man-made, but most of them are found naturally in the world.
Each element has it’s own unique atom, but they do share some structural similarities. We’ll talk about those in our next video
So just to recap:
All substances are made of atoms.
Elements are made up of one type of atom.
Compounds are made up of different atoms.
There are >100 different elements.
Elements are represented by symbols.
