Mill City Live: Outdoor Music Series – Curtiss A & the Jerks of Fate
Thursday, August 18, 6 – 8 pm
Curtiss A (aka Curt Almsted) has been a fixture in Minneapolis rock since 1978, when he recorded
with his punk-ish combo the Spooks. Never really a punk rocker in the traditional sense, Almsted
was more of a roots rock wise guy more influenced by John Lennon than John Lydon. In the late
'70s and early '80s, he was a big part of the burgeoning pre-Replacements/Hüsker Dü Minneapolis
rock scene which, at the time, included the Suburbs, Suicide Commandos, Flamin' Ohs and
Hypstryz. He recorded a great debut record, Courtesy (with future Replacement Slim Dunlap on
lead guitar), which brought him and indie label Twin/Tone acclaim. His last album was 1988's A
Scarlett Letter, with ex-NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson on board. Since 1980 he has performed an
annual tribute to John Lennon on the anniversary of his death. The Twin Cities’ most explosive
outdoor concert series is back for an eighth season with a slate of bands curated by music writer
Jim Walsh. Featuring legendary performers from the heyday of the Minneapolis sound, these
concerts will riff on American music in a gorgeous riverfront setting every Thursday from July 7
through August 18. Admission includes the concert and entrance to the museum from 4 to 9 p.m.
Food and drink by D’Amico Catering available for purchase. Fee: $5 per person; includes
admission to Mill City Museum. Free for MHS members.

McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street South, Suite 400
It’s summertime in Minnesota, and for many of us, that means long days on our favorite water body
fishing, boating and swimming. But those who have heard horror stories (or seen video) of giant
leaping fish in the South and elsewhere in the Midwest have good reason to fear for these summer
days of idyll. Invasive Asian carps are headed our way, and a network of federal, state and local
partners are working to prevent their establishment in the Mississippi River in Minnesota—and
their management if (more likely, “when”) they do make it here. Come find out from speaker John
Anfinson (Chief of Resource Management. National Park Service-Mississippi National River and
Recreation Area) how Minnesota is preparing for Asian carps and how you can help. Light
breakfast provided. Free. Transit and parking information are available at
http://www.mcknight.org/about/offices.aspx. The Mississippi River Forum is made possible by the
generous support of the Mississippi River Fund and the McKnight Foundation.

Telling River Stories Web Site
The “Telling River Stories” Web site can be found at www.riverstories.umn.edu. Telling River
Stories is a collaborative project that populates the urban Mississippi River corridor with stories of
how the city and the river have been jointly developed. The site highlights stories about the people

and places that make up today’s urban river landscape. In addition to the Web site, future
programs and on-site installations will be part of the overall project. The Telling River Stories
program is part of the River Life: Mississippi and U project, a partnership of the University of
Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, Institute for Advanced Study, Water Resource Center,
College of Design and Urban Studies Program. The River Life project connects University
research, teaching and civic engagement programs with off-campus partners who are working to
reinvigorate the urban Mississippi River. In the coming weeks, project team members will be
adding materials to the site’s coverage of “river stories” in the Twin Cities, St. Louis and New
Orleans. Check back often to view the progress.
River Talk
River Talk is a thoughtful, informed blog about issues that affect the Mississippi River that is
provided by Patrick Nunnally of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment RiverLife
