• Pop art is one of the major art
movements of the twentieth century.
• It began in Britain and America in
the mid to late 1950s.
• Key features include the use of bold
colours, found images, reference to
popular culture such as comics,
advertising and films.

15. Hope (2008) consists of a stylized stencil
portrait of Obama.
The design was created in one day and
printed first as a poster. Fairey sold 350
of the posters on the street immediately
after printing them. It was then more
widely distributed
The poster was inspired by Social
Realism and, while widely praised as
original and unique, can be seen as part
of a long tradition of contemporary
artists drawing inspiration from political
candidates and producing "posters that
break the mold not only in terms of color
and style but also in message and tone.“
Fairey himself has said, "My historical
inspiration was the well-known JFK
portrait where he is posed in a three-
quarters view looking slightly upward and
out into the distance. The image of
Lincoln on the five- dollar bill has a
similar feel."

Look at examples by Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Eelus.
You need to create a high contrast image first and then
print this to card.
Then cut out different layers carefully using a sharp
cutting knife (be very careful!).
Stencil print with acrylic and dry sponge or spray paint.
