Proposal
1. Proposal
Subjects:
I will be photographing a willing participant(s) from my class in an attempt to create a picture with
some kind of horror aspect. I have never attempted to capture horror in photography before so it
may be difficult to portray fear at first, but I am confident I can learn what does and doesn’t work
with practice. I will be attempting things like merging two people’s faces for dramatic effect,
juxtaposing the emotions of the same person in different shots, and also shaping my subjects
faces/upper bodies within things you would associate with horror and fear like daggers, sparse
woods and dark, empty hallways.
Locations:
I expect to be taking all of my pictures within York College. Some will be done in certain areas
because I will need to make use of doorways and hallways inside the building, but others will be
done in rooms with plain black/white walls for specific images and certain desired effects. Shooting
within college makes perfect sense for the type of images I aim to take, mostly because I have the
ability the shoot in darkened rumours and alter light settings.
Techniques:
The technique I will be using within my photographic experiment is double exposure. This is the
technique used within the piece of film that has inspired me to take on this task and I believe it is
perfect for the juxtaposition of fear and heightened emotion I will be attempting within my pictures.
Not only will I be using multiple exposures, I will also be converting all of images into black and white
to enhance the feeling of terror and hopefully elicit some level of fear. After doing this, I will then
add to some noise to the photograph as I have seen this technique used before and in tandem with
black and white photography it can look great, and add to the mood of the image.
Reasoning:
My inspiration for the pictures I will be taking is Ingrid Bergman’s 1966 film Persona. I believe
emulating the moments of horror and hyperrealism within this film will be interesting to view in
picture form, and I am hoping the images I take will have a similar effect on those that view them as
parts of the film do. I find horror to be quite a niche part of photography and something that will be
interesting to experiment with, and hopefully with practice I can complete an image with the desired
dark and deeply atmospheric result intended, and it will have the effect on the viewer I anticipate.
