Terrifying Photography Project Using Fear as Inspiration
1. Proposal
Subjects:
The subjects I will be using in my project will consist of around 3 models of no specific gender (or
more if I need them) this means I will have to bring a number of model release forms to conform to
the legal regulations and prevent problems arising in the future. I want the model to be able to
freely express the emotion: โfearโ to help me make my photographs look more realistic and scary, so
that when the viewer looks at them, they donโt see another friendly face, they see a terrified
individual whose expression makes their skin crawl.
I wish to use everyday objects and accessories to accentuate the fact that fear is normal, one of the
strongest emotions and it can happen anywhere โ I want to make inanimate objects such as: a door,
a stairway, a bedroom, a chair and so on, look daunting and terrifying.
Locations:
Abandoned buildings, desolate landscape and/or a family home which will help me create more fear
as it makes everyday objects and households appear slightly threatening, Iโm hoping it would make
the viewer question their own household safety subconsciously (not enough to cause problems).
Techniques:
I plan to use a range of techniques in order to achieve the desired effect of fear. I will be using:
Double/multiple exposure
Movement
Close to Subject
Out of Focus
Reflection
Photoshop
Reasoning:
Double/multiple exposure to create the majority of my images, this will be to create the effect that
the models are often ghostly apparitions.
I would also like to incorporate movement in to these photographs to give it a certain effect, for
example: I plan to create one image where a model is lying down on the floor, I want a photograph
of that alone and another photograph of a white sheet or someone in all white clothing to move
around in front of the camera so that it looks like the soul of the model has left them โ this is to
provoke fear from the viewer, this image is loosely based on death.
2. I also plan to use the close to subject technique to create some of my other image ideas, I want to
make the image look as distorted and shocking as possible, this could also mean incorporating
movement and out of focus in to these particular images, for example: I want to make an image of a
human body using the 3 different models, I plan to move the camera as much as possible to capture
the scene accurately, I then plan to use Photoshop and Photomerge to create the disfigured end
result.
I also plan to use reflection in some of my images โ this is to show fear of ourselves, I want the
photograph to show a shocked expression looking in to the mirror and a terrifying/dark/ugly
reflection to be shown โ this could involve using movement and out of focus in this, possibly even
close to subject.
I will be using Photoshop to edit these photographs, this includes: dodging and burning: to make
some areas seem darker and to accentuate the light sources, I will also be changing the opacity on
some of the images; especially when it comes to photo merge or multiple exposure, I will also be
blurring and sharpening some aspects of the photographs, this is to get a good end result โ
especially if out of focus is used, I may have to blur some parts that the camera may have missed, I
will also be changing the colour of the photographs, from full colour to black and white mostly, or
possibly changing the rest of the photograph black and white and keeping the fear aspect of the
photograph full colour.
