LISTEN BEFORE YOU LEAP…. Top 10 Best Practices Listen before you leap. Follow competitors, industry  leaders, major customers, targets, analysts, media, etc…but don’t do it via your main account… Examine relevant accounts in your market sector.  Who is using Twitter effectively? Put your best tweets forward! Be careful about assigning your “newbies” or “interns” to your  Twitter account. Assign your best brand ambassadors to tweet conversationally. Think about a separate account for the Founder/ CEO. Use interns to send news feed links via a corporate account. Check your @messages at  least 2 – 3x daily, more around special events, critical times. Look at your home page  and review Twitter trending topics every time you log in. “Netiquette” If there are no RTs or @ messages  in your stream, you’re not practicing good Twitter netiquette. Engage and be helpful.  Don’t push. Jumping In: Almost to the TOP Consider multiple accounts  carefully. Lots of pros/ cons. Remember there are lots  of Tweeters on Twitter because….well, they don’t know why!!! Tricks of the Trade 1.  The power of Twitter is amplified with 3rd party apps (desktop & mobile). Enabling advance scheduling of tweets, groups, and more. For desktop use, my fave is hootsuite. 2.  Make sure you buy a phone that works well w/Twitter. Test it. 3.  When you find your community, you will find their fave memes. Pay attention to trending topics: #FF, #musicmonday, #wirelesswednesday, #ecomonday, #waterwednesday, etc. 4.  Conference hashtags – you don’t need to be there to jump in! 5.  Party! Twitter parties, chats, sitewarmings are hot! #gno 6.  Visit What’s the Hashtag? 7.  Search.twitter.com is powerful.
