3. Step One: Create a Page
Note: All of the following tips are up to date with Facebook's February 2011 redesign.
• Avoid A Big Mistake: Create a page, not a profile. It goes against Facebook’s rules to create a profile
for a business. They can remove your page. Create a Page – Follow this Link:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php
• Too late? If you mistakenly created a personal Facebook profile for your company use this newly
launched tool: Facebook Business Page Migration Tool:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?migrate
• Come up with a name that makes it clear who you are and what you do. If you are creating a page for a
show, make sure you include the full name, or tagline, for example: “TAPS – The Annual Pizza Show or
the Pizza Conference – Show for Chefs.”
• Write and include keywords in your “About Us” Tab this will help your SEO rankings.

4. Step Two: Add Customized Elements to Your Page
Example of Good Profile Picture
• INSIDER TIP: Use a free tab application to enhance your page: Facebook lets you
create additional tabs that can display any extra info that is not standard. Create as
many additional menu items your event needs, including: A Welcome Page,
Discounts, Calendar, Contests, Hotel Info, Documents, and more.
• Here's how you add a customized tab:
In the Facebook search box Search for: Static FBML App, download it and then go to
your page, find the app on the left navigation and edit, add text, video links, photos.
• If you don't do anything else, add a Tab for a personal “Welcome Page” with the
Static FBML tool and make it the default landing page. Extra Modules will make your
page more user friendly and look more like a regular website, it will also convert more
visitors to fans.
• Here's how to make your new “Welcome Page” your the landing page:
Go to Edit Profile>Manage Permissions>Default Landing Tab>Select your new
Welcome Tab
• Make sure you take advantage of the new max size for Facebook page profile
pictures - 180px by 540px. Examples on Mashable.com: 10 creative ways of making
Facebook banners.

5. Step Three: Build a Following
• Invite Your Friends - Suggest your page to friends and colleagues who might “like” it.
• Invite Existing Email Subscribers - Leverage your rather huge email list and offer an incentive to
become a fan. Import a list of current attendees, sponsors and exhibitors to notify of your new page.
• Create an Interactive Promotion to embed on your page using a company like Wildfire to set it up:
http://www.wildfireapp.com/ Campaign formats include quizzes, contests, coupons, virtual gifts and more.
Includes analytics.
• Once you get 25 Fans you're allowed to register your unique username, ex: Facebook.com/Bartizan
Register here: http://facebook.com/username

6. Step Four: Start Posting Status Updates
• What to post? Share your content, news releases, blog posts, webinar invitations. Important: Add necessary show
contact info to your page. As long as it's relevant to your event participants.
• Green up your show. Post digital copies of your show guides, floor map, schedules, session handouts, exhibitor
sales collateral. Create an “Event Documents” Tab.
• Stuck for Post Ideas? How about these: Facebook Fan Only Event Invitations, Contests, Discounted Event
Admissions, Exclusive Two-for-One offers. Behind-the-scenes photos and videos, advanced event announcements,
interviews with exhibitors, list common Exhibitor or Attendee mistakes.
• Videos: Exhibitor booth setup, product demos, announcements, testimonials, presentations and events during the
course of the show. Interviews with exhibitors and attendees. Guest spots from editors or other industry experts,
“Live” drawings for products and prizes.
• Deals. Remember that most people become a fan of a page because of a promotion, it's important to keep rolling out
good promos to keep them interested.
• No Fluff Zone. Don't post for the sake of posting either – there's nothing wrong with remaining silent for months then
start up again as your event approaches. Your fans will appreciate it.
• Have the Page Admins setup on mobile phone to easily add event photos, videos, last minute changes, updates,
contest results and promos.
• When to post? Click through rates on Facebook updates are better on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays –
Highest is Tuesdays (Source: Vitrue Findings)
• Try posting on the weekend or after hours when many users log on. Save some good promos or an early bird
special for a Saturday.

8. Step Five: Promote your Page – Everywhere.
Your Facebook page is your new business card. Promote your page on your event
or association website.
• Encourage sharing by adding “Like” buttons on your events website and emails.
Allow people to “Like” or “Share” session descriptions, parties, speaker profiles,
etc. Quick way for users to share content, it fires directly into attendee’s and
exhibitor’s newsfeeds. You can download a “Find us on Facebook” badge to
promote your Facebook Page here: http://www.facebook.com/badges/

below and add in the link and/or text you'd like people to share via a status
update:

• Try a Facebook Ad: Don’t be afraid to pay for an ad, they are very effective.
Test it out by paying as little as $1 per day. You choose your ad’s audience
based on targeted criteria to drive traffic to your Facebook Page. Ads can be
seen by potential exhibitors, attendees and sponsors. Learn more:

• No brainer. Add your social media icons to all email signatures, letterhead,

• Improve public relations. Fans expect quick resolutions from social media – meet
expectations. Remember the old adage that an unhappy customer tells 10 people, now
with social media they tell 10 million.
• Get Fans to add content. Ask questions, ask for advice. Ask for Ideas to improve the
show experience.

"What are you planning?" field, a form will open. After you add a

locations. Everyone who check ins will see who's checked in.

admin and clicking "View Insights" on the left navigation.

• After your event is over, create a photo album and video highlight reel and post it
on your Facebook page. This is a good opportunity to send out a Facebook Direct
message with the highlight material, include a link to your post show poll.
• Create a Value Highlight package for event attendees to justify your show’s value to
their managers. Include listings of topics covered, keynote videos, etc.
• Post all session handouts via PDF on your Facebook page. Attendees spent money
to attend sessions, they want the PDF handouts.
• Setup a Post Show Poll to get feedback on sessions, events, services, venue and city
choice. Let the respondents know that their feedback will be used to improve next
year’s show.
• Post a follow up with a summary of your poll findings and actions you will be
taking based on the polls.
