Emergence of the
Indian Fashion Industry
With the gradual emergence of the aspect of
globalization, a massive change is noticeable
in the Indian fashion industry.

According to industry body Assocham, the
domestic fashion business has become
nearly a Rs. 750-crore industry in 2012 from
Rs. 270-crore in 2008, given the increased
demand for designer clothes.

As per The Global Fashion Industry-Growth In Emerging
Markets report (released by Grail Research)
“Industry growth in India is mainly driven by the
 growing exposure of domestic designers at
 international forums.”
Between 2008 and 2012, the Indian fashion industry has
grown at 178%, and reached a worth of USD 189 MN.


According to the article in the Wall Street Journal;

 “Until recent years there was limited space for
   Indian fashion in Western markets…Indian
  designers, especially the younger ones, are
  increasingly producing collections that are more
  suitable to the lifestyle of western consumers.”

Although nascent, the Indian fashion
industry has experienced significant
expansion through the last decade
however the concern remains…

“They (the designers) do not take part
in international fashion events as often
as they should. Their participation
should not just increase but be
continuous…Not everyone can afford
it.” However being aware of emerging
trends he says “ The way fashion is
prospering, we will definitely rule the
fashion world, maybe 10 years from
now.”

 At IE, I would like to get hands-on practice and a business acumen
 through the study method and student centric approach. At an
 institution that nurtures and promotes entrepreneurism, I can enhance
 my skillset and understand businesses up-close. After my stint at IE, I
 would like to put my learning to practice at an established work
 environment before ultimately returning to my venture.

As per The Global Fashion Industry-Growth In Emerging Markets report (released by Grail Research) “Industry growth in India is mainly driven by the growing exposure of domestic designers at international forums.” Between 2008 and 2012, the Indian fashion industry has grown at 178%, and reached a worth of USD 189 MN. According to the article in the Wall Street Journal; “Until recent years there was limited space for Indian fashion in Western markets…Indian designers, especially the younger ones, are increasingly producing collections that are more suitable to the lifestyle of western consumers.” - Armando Branchini, the executive director of Italy’s luxury brand Altagamma

Although nascent, the Indian fashion industry has experienced significant expansion through the last decade however the concern remains… “They (the designers) do not take part in international fashion events as often as they should. Their participation should not just increase but be continuous…Not everyone can afford it.” However being aware of emerging trends he says “ The way fashion is prospering, we will definitely rule the fashion world, maybe 10 years from now.” - Sunil Sethi , president of the Fashion Development Council of India

The Challenges  The existing model is very rigid and monopolistic, this leads to talented designers losing opportunities.  Locally, demand and growth are on a rise but globally, visibility and brand presence are minimal.

At an institution that nurtures and promotes entrepreneurism, I can enhance my skillset and understand businesses up-close. After my stint at IE, I would like to put my learning to practice at an established work environment before ultimately returning to my venture.

Overseas clients now seek Indian cuts, hand work and vibrant colours  Slowly but steadily designers are becoming more professional, better clued in to international trends and able to deliver to the foreign buyers  The slow corporatisation of the Indian fashion realm similar to that of the world leading Japanese and Italian fashion industries  Being a one-of-its-kind service in the Indian market
