2. OBJECTIVES:
• At the end of this lesson, the students will
expect to:
• To understand how America discover;
• To knowing about Columbus contributions
for European people and;
• How Europeans starting colonized by
Columbus.

3. INTRODUCTION
• The history of America actually began over
25,000 ago when hunting bands from Asia
crossed over the land bridge that existed
then between Siberia and Alaska.
• These were the first people to set foot on our
continent and thus they are the real
“DISCOVERES” of America.

4. • Over the centuries their descendants spread
throughout North America (what is today
Canada, and the United States) and South
America.

• Christopher
Columbus (Italian: Cristoforo
Colombo; Spanish: Cristóbal
Colón;Portuguese: Cristóvão
Colombo; born between October 31,
1450 and October 30, 1451 – 20 May
1506) was an Italian explorer,
navigator, and colonizer, born in
the Republic of Genoa, in what is
today northwestern Italy. Under the
auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of
Spain, he completed four
voyages across the Atlantic Ocean
that led to general European
awareness of the American
continents. Those voyages, and his
efforts to establish permanent
settlements on the island
of Hispaniola, initiated the Spanish
colonization of the New World.

7. COLUMBUS DAY
• Many countries in the New
World and elsewhere celebrate the
anniversary of Christopher
Columbus' arrival in the Americas,
which happened on October 12, 1492,
as an officialholiday. The landing is
celebrated as Columbus Day in
the United States, as Día de la
Raza ("Day of the Race") in many
countries in Latin America,
as Discovery Day in the Bahamas,
as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta
Nacional in Spain, as Día del Respeto
a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of
Respect for Cultural Diversity)
in Argentina, and as Día de las
Américas (Day of the Americas)
in Belize and Uruguay. These
holidays have been celebrated
unofficially since the late 18th
century, and officially in various
areas since the early 20th century.

8. • Columbus called “INDIANS” because he
believed that he had reached the “INDIES”
the term used then for the spice-trading
regions in the Pacific.
• Although Columbus was not the first person
to come to America, he is regarded as its
“DISCOVERER”. Actually Columbus
discovered America for Europeans.

9. • Vikings had made voyages here over 400 years
before Columbus, but it was not until
Columbus voyage that Europe as whole
became aware of our continent.
• Like in Philippine History, Magellan was
discover the Philippines in 1521, but not for the
whole, but for the Europeans. Because the
Philippines was already discover by thousand
years ago before the coming of the Spaniards.

10. • So Magellan and Columbus was the great
explorers in Europe. But for the Europeans.
• The comparison between the two is also the
same.

11. • In the diary he kept on his first voyage to
America, Columbus exclaims over and over
again about the strange beauty of the places
he visited. He writes about flocks of parrots
blocking out the sum and fish painted blue,
yellow, red, and other hues, and the colors
are so bright that there is not a man who
would not be astonished, and would not take
great delight seeing them.

12. • He person wish never to leave the islands.
And he was amazed by the people who
painted themselves many colors.
• Of course not every place on the American
continent is like the tropical paradise of the
Bahama Islands.

13. • Columbus followed up his first historic
voyage with several more. But he was not
alone. Other explorers sailing for Spain as
well France, England, and Holland soon
followed him to the new world.
• A bitter Columbus was to comment: They
all made fun of my plan then; now even
tailors wish to discover.

14. • Often drawn by tales of treasure, the
explorers came to see what was here. And
still believing a way could be found to Asia,
they came to look for a water route around
or through the new world to the spices, tea
and silk of the East.
