Labor Day holiday hours
Most offices on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, a
federal holiday commemorating Labor Day. Most military activities will have curtailed
operations Friday, Aug. 29. The following facilities and places of business have
reported open or closed hours for Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Unless otherwise noted, this list
applies to Sept. 1. This list is not all encompassing; please check with the facility you
wish to visit for more details.

New – JBM-HH Change of Command/Change of Responsibility
The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Change of Command/Change of
Responsibility for Col. Fern O. Sumpter and Command Sgt. Maj. Earlene Y. Lavender is
scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. in Conmy Hall on the Fort Myer portion
of JBM-HH. All are welcome to attend. Attire is military duty uniform or business
attire.
New – State Department Federal Credit Union closed Aug. 29-Sept. 2
The State Department Federal Credit Union located on the Fort McNair portion
of the joint base will be closed beginning Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. until Sept. 2 at 8 a.m. in order
to perform technology enhancements. During this time, most SDFCU products will
continue to operate normally; however, some services may be impacted. For a summary
of what is available, unavailable or limited during the Labor Day weekend upgrade,

New – Tutor and a Buddy
The Tutor and a Buddy Program is looking for military service members to

New – Personal Financial Management
Henderson Hall will host a Personal Financial Management Program workshop
Aug. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bldg. 29, room 204. The workshop will focus on

New – Pre-Labor Day picnic at the Marine Landing Deck
Henderson Hall is having a pre-Labor Day battalion picnic Aug. 28 from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on the Marine Landing Deck. Headquarters and Service Battalion personnel
eat for free. All others are welcome and pay $13 for a picnic lunch consisting of
barbeque chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, chips and

New – Marine Corps Martial Arts Program
Any Marine in the National Capital Region who wants to achieve their gray,
green, brown or black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program is invited to the
next training at Henderson Hall. The course begins Sept. 2 and runs every week day
through Oct. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. The training is at the battalion PT field adjacent
to the Cpl. Terry L. Smith Gym on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. For

4. New – Smith Gym to begin new hours Sept. 1
MCCS Henderson Hall announces a change in hours of operation at the Cpl.
Terry L. Smith Gymnasium effective Monday, Sept. 1, 2014. New hours are as follows:
Monday through Friday 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
gym is open most federal holidays 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Holiday hours are posted online
at www.mccsHH.com.
The gym, which serves over 10,000 patrons per month, is located on the
Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall and is named in honor of
Cpl. Terry L. Smith, who was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Read about Cpl.

New – Dinner in the Barracks needs volunteers
Henderson Hall’s Family Readiness Officer is hosting a Dinner in the Barracks
and is in need of volunteers. The DITB program is designed to provide a home-cooked
or store bought meal to the single Marines living in the barracks. This month’s theme is

New – Welcome Aboard Brief
MCCS Henderson Hall will hold a Welcome Aboard orientation session
Tuesday, September 9, 8 – 10:30 a.m., in Bldg. 29, classroom 105. Newcomers will learn
about their new duty station and important information about life in the National
Capital Region. After a break for lunch, there is a bus tour of the local area, including
downtown Washington, D.C., starting at 12 noon. Family members are welcome to
attend the brief and tour.

Annual Doggie Dip Sept. 6
The JBM-HH Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will host its annual
Doggie Dip swim at the Fort Myer Officers Club Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. This free

Fort Myer Thrift Shop closed until Sept. 2
The Fort Myer Thrift Shop will be closed until Sept. 2 when it is open its regular
schedule. The regular fall schedule is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month. The next Saturday opening will be
Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Thrift Shop is still taking donations, which can be

Marine Corps uniforms available
New & gently used Marine Corps uniforms are available for FREE; located in

Marine Corps Fest taking place at Quantico Sept. 6
National Capital Region Marines and their families are welcome to the Marine
Corps Fest at Marine Base Quantico Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the field adjacent to
Little Hall. Children of all ages can take part in various activities at the Kids Corner, the
First Lady of the Marine Corps, Mrs. Bonnie Amos will be hosting a Front Porch Series
and there will be a car show held at Daly Hall parking lot.

Quantico Car Show Sept. 6
Marine Corps Base Quantico is hosting a Car Show Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Daly Hall parking lot. The lot opens at 9 a.m. and fees for competing cars range
from $10 per car for active duty military, $15 per car for retirees and $20 per car for
civilians. Spectator admission is free. Trophies will be awarded for various categories.

Community Flea Market schedule for Sept. 6
The next community flea market will be held Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the

Navy Uniform Center to open in MCX Sept. 9
MCCS Henderson Hall announces the grand opening of the Marine Corps
Exchange (MCX) Henderson Hall third floor addition and Navy Exchange (NEX)
Uniform Center. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event and enjoy refreshments afterward.
There will be giveaways and drawings for products, including electronics, cookware,
and apparel. The store is located on the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-
Henderson Hall.
6. Federal Employee benefits open season to begin Nov. 10
It’s never too early to begin planning. Open season for Federal Benefits runs from
Nov. 10 through Dec. 8. Employees are responsible for ensuring they update their
information and make any necessary changes during this time. For more information,

Redskins tickets for sale
The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Community Center Ticket Office has
Washington Redskins tickets for sale. Tickets are sold in pairs only and cost is $260 per
pair. Seats are located in section 129, lower level end zone. Tickets will only be sold in
person. Tickets are available to all DoD ID card holders. Preseason tickets to the
Cleveland Browns vs. Washington Redskins game Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. are also available.
The seats are located in section 129 lower level end zone and will be sold only in pairs.

Feds Feed Families
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall personnel support the Agriculture Department’s
annual Feds Feed Families food drive.
The campaign, which runs through August, is a voluntary effort undertaken by
federal employees, who bring nonperishable food items to their offices for distribution
to local food banks.
Bring your donations to several places on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base:
The Fitness Center, the Exchange, Bldg. 203, Bldg. 205 and Bldg. 59.
On the Fort McNair portion of the joint base, bring non-perishable food items to
Bldg. 39, the Shoppette, the State Department Federal Credit Union, Marshall Hall

Among the items on the “most-needed” list are low-sodium or no salt canned

butter, brown and white rice and pasta. Families also need 100 percent fruit juices,
paper products, cleaning supplies and hygiene items – all the things any family needs.

Fire safety reminder
The use of charcoal barbeque grills and gas fired grills on decks, balconies,
covered parking areas, patios, or under any building overhang is prohibited by the Joint
Base Myer-Henderson Hall Fire Department. All grills must be used a minimum of 15
feet from any building structure and must not block any walk ways/pathways. The
storage of fuel bottles from the gas fired grills inside any structure or on balconies is
prohibited. Charcoal grills may be stored on porches; decks, balconies and patios
provided the charcoal is completely extinguished and cold. For more information, call

This two-part seminar is designed to provide parents who are separated or divorced with the
tools to ensure that they are able to continue supporting and encouraging their children despite
the breakup of the family unit. You must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of

Exceptional Family Member Program yoga therapy for children with special
needs is scheduled for Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Terry L. Smith Gym. The

New – Stranger Danger self defense class
This class is designed to teach your children, ages 3-18, about the dangers of
strangers and provide them with techniques and skills that increase their awareness
and safety. The class will cover basic age appropriate escape tactics, as well as
specialized training for older children focused on driving safety plans and cell phone
distractions. Parents are encouraged to attend and learn a few techniques alongside
their children. The class will be held Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Terry L. Smith

New – STARS for Spouses
Spouse Transition & Readiness Seminars (STARS) are now offered by the Career
Resource Management Center on the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-
Henderson Hall. The next session is Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. The
workshop will relay practical information to alleviate the stressors associated with the
transition process as their service member leaves the military. Registration is required.

will assist in drafting a private sector résumé. Learn how to draft targeted résumés and

MCCS Offers New Community Counseling Program
The new Community Counseling Program is designed to provide increased
access to counseling for Marines, sailors, and their families, and to focus on screening,
prevention, and intervention of stressors and problems to improve readiness and
quality of life. We offer individual, couple, family, child, and group counseling services.
All counselors are independently licensed and credentialed professionals who can work
with you to develop a plan and find solutions to meet your needs and help you

ACAP supports spouses in transition
Army Career and Alumni Program offers services to the spouses of military
personnel who are transitioning: both retiring or ETSing (Expiration of Term in Service).
Some of the services offered to transitioning spouses include one-on-one assistance
with a resume, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, Department of Labor Employment
Workshop (includes the interview process, dress for success, building a resume, salary
negotiation) and financial planning.
More services include classes on home buying, credit scores, investing, TRICARE,
finding and applying for federal jobs and much more.

11. Anger Management workshops offered
Marine & Family Programs offers anger management workshops weekly,
Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshops are designed to teach eight tools for
managing anger. Participants may start at any time, but must attend all eight sessions to
receive a certificate of completion.
Sessions are in Building 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the
joint base. The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members, and

Stress workshops held Tuesdays
Marine & Family Programs offers workshops on coping with work and family stress
on an ongoing basis. The 12-session, evidence-based series, designed to teach strategies
for dealing with stressors, is held Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Bldg. 12’s conference
room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. Topics include identifying
stressors, deep breathing and muscle relaxation, assertive communication, changing
yourself talk, eating right, exercise and developing a personal stress management plan.
The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members and military

New – Temporary road closures/delays on JBM-HH Tuesday, Aug. 26
The roads around the Memorial Chapel on the Fort Myer portion of JBM-HH
(McNair Road, Carpenter Road and Patton Drive) will be temporarily closed Tuesday,
Aug. 26 from approximately 9:20 to 9:40 a.m. for a full honors military funeral service.
All vehicle traffic will be halted and redirected during this time. For more information,

Summerall Parking Lot will be closed Aug. 26 at 9 p.m. until after the JBM-HH
Change of Command/Change of Responsibility ceremony Aug. 27. The Change of

Fort Myer portion of the joint base.
Parking lot/ car wash temporary closure on Henderson Hall
The parking lot in front of Bldg. 12 on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint
base will be closed until Aug. 29 to facilitate repaving. Due to this road work, the car

Arlington County drunk driving prevention campaign underway
12. The Arlington County Police Department have begun cracking down on
drunken motorists during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
Through Sept. 1, Arlington County Police Department will take part in the
nationwide campaign. This effort, called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” focuses on
combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness. Officers will
take part in saturation patrols and step up DUI enforcement efforts to detect and
apprehend violators.
The maximum penalty in Virginia for the first conviction for driving under the
influence is 12 months in jail, a $2,5000 fine and a 12-month suspension of driving
privileges.
