2. Theories and concepts from a particular discipline represent a speciality of
knowledge from that discipline (Krishnan, 2009)
Varied disciplinary perspective differ in e.g. logic of thinking, form the causal
relationship between variables
Complexity of land use-transport relationship relates to many elements in
city growth process i.e. economic, infrastructure, people’s behaviour
Varied theories from different disciplinary
perspective about city growth
3. economic perspective, several events show growth and are commonly
used as indicators that growth is being achieved, e.g. increasing GDP (gross
domestic products), increased productivity of land use, and increasing in
purchasing power are a small fraction of the economic variables
geographer perspective, increasing population and activities need more
space to live. Indicator usually use to define the growth is expansion of city
areas from the city core toward the countryside: widening of geographical
boundary
sociology perspective, growth of cities is also determined by changes of
life behaviour (Champion, 2001). It turns from rural life behaviour into city life
behaviour as an effect of adopted social processes. Rural life behaviour is
greatly influenced by agricultural life whilst city life is in contrast to this.
Some different disciplinary views in
growth of the city
4. Rossi-Hansberg and Wright (2007)
• Concerning about economic activities in cities
• General equilibrium economic to respect the tension between some elements
of city economic.
• Giving credit to some other papers that concern with endogenous growth and
city growth process topic.
• The discussion includes the trade-off between transport cost and
agglomeration (p. 597).
• The agglomeration keeps the balance between the cost of commuting and
economic cost of agglomeration.
An example in economist perspective
5. (Zhang et al, 2013)
• It concerns about spatial determination in growth of the city.
• The ‘growth’ is determined by expansion
• It discussed the urban expansion as a result of various geographical
factors
An example in geographer perspective
6. (Tirtosudarmo, 2010)
• The paper discusses about growth of cities in coastal cities in Java
island, Indonesia
• Growth of the city can be seen from two dimensions: physical and social
dimension
• It concerns with social transformation in urban area
• The development of a cities (e.g. infrastructures, economic activities) has
affected social and cultural dynamics of population
An example in sociologist perspective
7. Contrasting three different perspectives

economic activities
Concerns about
expansion of urban

Concerns about social
transformation

• Different perspective has different views in understanding the
relationship between land use-transport relationship.
• The comparison step is performed by comparing the diagrams from
different disciplinary perspectives.
• The understanding from varied disciplinary perspectives is
considered in building some future alternative narratives of the city
• This approach is going to be used to help the building of city
narratives in different disciplinary perspectives
