The strands of the New Zealand

Number – Knowledge.
2+2 (basic facts). 10 more than 32
Strategies.
How to work a problem out.
Round and compensate.
Most of scheduled maths time
is spent on this strand.
Geometry:
Shapes, symmetry, direction,
translation, enlargement…
Measurement:
Time, money, length, distance
, speed…
Statistics:
Gathering and comparing
data, tally charts, graphs,
probability, talking about
results…
Stages in Numeracy:
Examples of thinking at each
stage for addition / subtraction
Children learn by…
Being actively involved.
Question… How? What? Where?
When? Who? Why? Which?
What makes you think that?
How do you know?
It’s not about the destination (i.e.
the answer) …the journey is
highly valued!
Two key questions to ask your children…
Explain how you got that answer ?
Is there another way you could
work it out?
Teachers: Maths is all around us!
Be the detective and find the
pattern – crack the code!
Facilitate and support children to
put on their mathematical lenses.
Integrate.
