Introduction
• According to thetrace.org it states, “ As of December 23, a total of 12,942
people had been killed in the Unites States in 2015 in a gun homicide,
unintentional shooting, or murder suicide. As you see in this statement that
the numbers are outrageous and something has to change. As a group we
believe that there should be more regulations in regards to gun control. So
in our presentation we will first discuss the definition of gun control. Next
we will discover the statistics behind gun violence. Also, we will uncover
the lack of requirements when it comes to purchasing guns and the lack of
rules for gun control finally leading into how we can improve our gun
control laws to make our country a better place.
Gun Control laws refers to laws
aim to restricts or regulate the
sale, purchase, or possession of
firearms through licensing,
registration, or identification
requirements.
What is Gun
Control?
Identifying and Define the problem
• What should be done to
decrease the number of
people getting killed by guns?
• Some ways that we can try
are having stricter policies
when it comes to purchasing
guns. Also, having people
going to intense trainings if
they decide to buy guns so
they will know how to use
them properly.
• Who is harmed by the lack of
gun control laws?
• Currently in our country the
people who are harmed by this
the most are the minorities.
Also, everyone can be harmed
by this emotionally because we
all live in the same country and
to see the numbers of people
getting killed by guns it can be
tough to deal with.
• According to bostonglobe.com it
states in the graph, “ The rate of
such incidents have climbed
over the past three decades”.
• As of now we believe that till
this day it is still rising.
Statistics
Gun Violence in
America
• 31 Americans are murdered with guns every day and 151 are treated for a gun assault in
an emergency room.
• Every day on average 46 people are shot or killed in an accident with a gun.
• The U.S. firearm homicide rate is 20 times higher than the combined rates of 22 developed
countries
• A gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic
homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self-defense.
Suicides and homicides are resulted from:
• Conflicts
• Mental health problems
• Tendency of violence
Statistics shows that:
• States with higher gun ownership rates have higher gun
murder rates
• Gun death rates are generally lower in states with
restrictions such as safe-storage requirements or assault-
weapons bans
The gun violence is because of
people instead of guns.
The solution to improve the
violence should be from two aspects
to both restrict the number of gun
owners and regulate on gun usage.
Solutions
1 - Mandatory Mental Health Screenings
Mass shooters are often linked to
undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues.
1 in 5 adults has a mental illness
60% of those with mental illness go
without treatment
Half of all chronic mental illness begins
at age 14
Pros & Cons
PROs
• Opens communication
• Removal of stigma
• Reduction in all crime
• Reduction in suicides
• Provides more training for Health
Care Professionals
CONs
• Privacy
• Margin of error
• Filling the mental health care
positions
• Costly
• Database management
Solutions
2 – Tighten Up Background Checks
Stricter background checks reducing
those who mean harm from
acquiring a gun
Pros & Cons
PROs
• Keeps guns away from felons
• Provides a stronger database of
gun owners
• Makes the checks more uniform
from state to state.
CONs
• Doesn’t prevent gun
“borrowing”
• Not everyone who means harm
has a history of violence
• Could take a long time
Solutions
3 – Provide a Culture of Gun Safety
More requirements for gun
ownership including
Training
Licensing
Renewals
Pros & Cons
PROs
• Creates a society not scared of
guns
• Provides for more responsible
gun ownership
• Knowledge is power
CONs
• Amount of tracking needed to
implement
• Creation & Maintenance of the
databases
• Cost to implement
V. OFFER THE BEST SOLUTION
The strict regulations are effective to reduce the
criminal rate, but they are not the real cures.
Proposed barriers
to gun ownership:
According to the FBI, in 2013
alone there were 21,093,273
background checks on new gun
sales. Millions and millions of these
were purchases by first-time gun
owners
We need:
• More detailed
requirements to
purchase a gun
• Mandatory
training of proper
gun usage
Regular gun usage training:
• Fully understand how to use a gun
• Be aware of responsibilities of possessing a gun
Also, firearm permits should be renewed once a few years
like driver’s licenses.
