PROFILE
I am a dependable, resourceful Railway Engineer with over 25 years of experience and
knowledge. As well as being a Technical Officer and I.R.S.E. licensed Signal
Maintenance Tester on the mainline (1.4.160v1), I am also a fully qualified Technical
Officer on London Underground having completed a 2 year intensive training
programme. Having held an S.M.T.H. Ticket since its introduction and carrying out all
aspects of Maintenance Testing, including Fault finding, fault investigation and wrong
side failure investigations, I consider myself to be a very experienced and competent
Maintenance Tester.
I am also a fully licensed Mod 3BL / Mod 4 Functional Tester (1.3.170v2), and have
been a key member of the Thales testing team involved with the upgrades to both the
Jubilee and Northern Line signalling systems on London Underground which have
surpassed everyone's expectations. I am also able to hold safety A.W.C’s on both the
conventional signaling system and the new Thales T.B.T.C. system on London
Underground.
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
Tubelines June 2014 – Present
After the successful completion of the Northern Line upgrade, Thales have sub
contracted their T.O’s to Tubelines until the next major upgrade is signed off.
In this time with Tubelines I have been holding safety A.W.C’s on both the old and new
signaling systems to carry out re-rails, sleeper replacement, signal asset replacements and
the routing of engineering trains whilst ensuring the integrity of the signaling system.
I have also been trained to use their new electronic reporting system “Maximo”, which
provides a paperless delivery and reporting process.
2. Thales March 2009 – June 2014
In March 2009 I started contracting as a London Underground T.O. for Thales,
overseeing the safe installation of the new T.B.T.C. system on the Jubilee and now the
Northern lines.
In this time I was mentored and passed out to work on the Westrace System and gained
valuable experience testing out all sites on these lines.
In 2012 I moved from install to Test & Commissioning and have be carrying out
verification, strap and function plus commissioning works on the T.B.T.C. system whilst
still holding A.W.C.’S to ensure the integrity of the existing signaling system.
Throughout my time working for Thales I prided myself on being able to identify and
often remedy potential problems, ensuring a smooth transition from the old to new
signaling system. I also made myself available to work most weekends and thus became a
reliable and integral part of most commissioning's which mostly occurred at weekends or
holiday periods.
Metronet August 2006 – March 2009
Since joining Metronet to work on the underground I have been undergoing an intensive
2 year training program elevating my position from Track Circuit Technician through to
Auto and Points Technician then onto Technical Officer whilst also gaining valuable
work experience on the underground as a team leader holding safety A.W.C.’s. In this
time I have also gained a maintainers I.R.S.E. license to go with the Testers license I
already hold.
Vital Solutions July 2005 – August 2006
I have been contracted to B.B.R.S. as an S.M.T.H. Tester/Team Leader and involved with
the upgrading of a level crossing on the West Coast main line. This has ultimately ended
up with me having the duty of Site Manager and overseeing the following tasks:-
Leading and coordinating installation teams
Assisting new works T.I.C.
Ensuring rail standards are met
Identifying potential problems
Playing a leading role in the commissioning of the project
Coyle Rail March 2005 – July 2005
My position with Coyle Rail was that of S.M.T.H. and my duties were to safely take a
team of scientific testers to relay rooms all over the country and observe that correct
working practices were adhered to in the equipment rooms.
Global Rail February 2002 - December 2004
Whilst Working For Global Rail I was contracted to work for Balfour Beatty Rail projects as a
senior S.M.T.H. Tester. I was involved in many projects including :-
The renewal of relays and their bases (this involved extensive R.R.I. Testing)
Covering P. Way renewals/Points grinding
Testing and renewal of faulty multi core signalling cables
Renewal and testing of external track circuit equipment
Location and relay room correlation
Lead S.M.T.H. of Liverpool Lime Street cable diversion
Birmingham New Street platform installation (major project involving new works)
3. Prima Rail Services November 2001 - February 2002
Prima Rail Services introduced me to the world of rail contracting. I was employed as an
S.M.T.H. and experienced working all over the country. Some of the major projects I worked on
included the following:-
C.T.R.L. (London) Installation and testing work involved with the diversion of trains
Points - Renewal and upgrades of various types of points
Correlation and site reports of location and relay rooms in connection with the renewal
barriers
Jarvis Rail October 1997 - November 2001
When Jarvis Rail took over the maintenance of the East Coast main line I was already employed
as a Sen. Eng. Tech (4) Team Leader. In my time working for Jarvis Rail I was personally
commended and awarded golden asset certificates for the work me and my team completed on
our maintenance area which culminated in the busy east end junction of Newcastle Central
Station achieving months and months of operation with no point failures, something that had
never before been achieved. This was achieved by first addressing the poor P. Way on the area
then carrying out point care on every set of points replacing all worn parts including adjustable
and fixed cams, cam followers, micro switches, stretcher bars ect. Because of this achievement I
was used as a consultant to create multi discipline point care teams, as I had identified that the
main cause of point failures was in fact directly attributed to poor P.Way through the points
themselves.
After being a key part of creating joint point care teams, I was utilized as a senior fault
investigation technical officer, who together with my team were able to replicate and ultimately
fix many repetitive failures that had been plaguing the whole North East area for months if not
years (unfortunately a lot of these repetitive failures involved testing in torrential rain as this was
often a major factor with the faults).
Balfour Beatty Rail Maintenance June 1995 - October 1997
I was employed as An Eng. Tech (3) when Balfour Beatty took over the Eastern Infrastructure
Maintenance Company after Privatization. My Duties involved:-
Faulting/maintenance of the East Coast main line.
Assisting the Team Leader in his duties
Act as Team Leader to cover sick and holidays
British Rail September 1990 - June 1995
I worked through the ranks from assistant technician, technician, gaining valuable experience
from the old timers at a time when experience, knowledge and trust was earned over a long period
of time, and respect for the older, more experienced staff, no matter what their grade was and
integral part of the structure for the railway.
Indeed one of the most important jobs at the time was that of a lookout man and I felt very
privileged once I eventually earned the trust of my team to be ‘given the flags’.
