Mobile communications, especially in emergency situations, but also as businesses increasingly use mobile connectivity for their operations, is becoming critical. Public safety, emergency response, crisis control and smooth day-to-day operations all rely on people connecting and information being shared accurately. Telstra today is enabling voice and narrowband communications through both private and public mobile networks, while working to develop an integrated mobile broadband solution to meet the needs of tomorrow for emergency services, mining, transport and utilities.
This presentation will explore the coverage, resiliency and customer experience that underpin the Telstra mobile broadband communication network, and the roadmap Telstra has to deliver an emergency- grade mobile network that offers dedicated spectrum coupled with the reach and mobile broadband experience that Telstra offers.

Continue to expand our coverage by
adding more than 100 new coverage
sites to the network.
Continue to invest in the backhaul to
ensure our customers continue to
enjoy a superior network experience
in more places.
Telstra has invested over $4 Billion into the mobile network to date.

Telstra 4G leading the way
Experience Australia’s largest 4G coverage - our “4x4” mobile network
With Telstra you enjoy 4G speeds
across 4 times the coverage area of
any other network in Australia
4G not only provides faster speeds, it
also provides greater capacity so you
can enjoy a more reliable and richer
network experience.

Keeping the community safe
The LANES strategy is a unified national approach. It’s designed to better support our emergency
services organisations as they protect communities now and in the future.

PPDR Capability
Every Day
ESOs have sole and exclusive use of their own
spectrum, ensuring critical communications are
provided to remove, rural and urban centres more
equitably.
Major Incident
During a major event, PPDR capability is
immediately augmented using commercial
capability by providing priority access and
preferential data treatment for mission critical
communications in Telstra’s LTE coverage
areas.
Disaster
In the event of a disaster critical
communications are further augmented with
additional PPDR capability that is available
to all ESOs.

3GPP standards engagement for public safety
Telstra strongly support a 3GPP roadmap
3GPP’s objective is to preserve the considerable
strengths of LTE while also adding features
needed for public safety
Active industry engagement with the LTE
standards community in 3GPP to create the
system improvements needed to meet public
safety requirements.
Cooperation has been established between
3GPP and other groups to ensure broad
representation of the public safety community.

on ruggedized, fit for purpose devices
Telstra have been active in the industry to
develop a regional harmonised capability
• APT (Asia Pacific Telecommunity) forum work
with PPDR band harmonisation
• APT forum work with LANES adoption
(and subsequent interest in other regions)

We have demonstrated LANES
in the live Telstra network
Following the Showcase, LANES was
successfully deployed at the Woodford Folk
Festival by the Queensland Police Service.
We showcased this capability to Government and
Industry representatives in Brisbane and Perth
through a series of live demonstrations
In late November/early December 2013, Telstra
piloted LANES in the live network.
