2. Music videos are often called promotion
videos or even ‘Promos’ due to the fact that
they are Promotional devices.
In the 1980’s the term ‘Rock Video’ was often
used to describe this type of entertainment,
even though it has fallen out of use.
The earliest music video ‘Promos’ was made in 1950’s,
however, before then in 1920’s, films by animators such
as Oskar Fischinger were accompanied by music scored
labelled ‘Visual music’.
In 1984, music publishers Edward B Marks and Joe Stern
hired George Thomas the electrician and various other
performers to promote the sales of their song ‘The Little Lost
Child’. Using a magic lantern, Thomas projected a series of
still images on a screen simultaneous to live performances.
This would become a popular form of entertainment known
as the illustrated song, the first step towards music videos.
3. Similarities:
• Party animal figure.
• Always incorporate the band/singer playing live.
• Head banging.
• Close ups on instruments.
• Tense facial expression, matches with the lyrics.
Differences:
• More subtle colours (black and white)
• Quite a normal video, subtle camera work, however it has
some special affects but not too much that it over does it,
just enough to look affective.
• Filmed at a concert (their concert) and there’s also a few
clips in a simple white room singing, with extreme close
ups of the singers face and lips.
• Big hair (quiff), less simple clothes, more leather jackets,
expected to see this fashion sense in the 1998 video and
the fashion sense from the 1998 video in this one.
• Very un stereotypical.
Differences:
• Smoke.
• Camera editing has no special affects in the video, no
warped or spiny affects, just like everyday life.
• Video of a story behind it, about a family struggling.
• Filmed in a normal house with family pictures etc..
• Long sweepy hair, simple clothes (jeans and a t-shirt).
• Pan shots of the area they are in, shows smoke affects
and normality of everyday lives.
• 1998, at home. 2015, at a concert. –Different but also
similar that it shows the singers everyday lives and
popularity.
4. Differences:
• Madonna’s tummy out but still fully clothed (more
respectful)
• Men in the video seem to have a lot more respect for
the women, more gentlemanly.
• Women subtle and not much make up.
• Subtle every day colours, sky blue, blacks, whites etc..
• Men fully clothed.
• Shows videos of every life, people going to work,
school etc.. Business people, cab drivers, things you
see everyday.
Differences:
• Singers and dancers half naked, sexual clothes, have a lot of
main body parts out, lots of flesh showing.
• Men seem quite disrespectful towards the women, dancing
all over them.
• Women lots of make up and big backcombed hair.
• Very bright colours.
• Men half naked also, showing off their bodies.
• Video is very acted, doesn’t show everyday life, shows how
their life is constantly in a music studio.
Similarities:
• Special affects, lots of spinning in both videos, warped and the
speed has been sped up to look like every day life, indicating how
fast life goes by.
• Neither of the videos really link into the lyrics, seem quite
abstract and random.
• Shows the main singers quite a lot, mainly
dancing.
5. Differences:
• Music video is more of a story like video, lots of
special affects.
• Shows the male in a mansion, indicating that he is
rich.
• A lot of above the head shots.
• Always has his belly out, shows a lot of flesh.
• No group shots, as its only himself in the video.
• Lots of wide shots, shows majority of the room,
showing he’s in a big mansion lonely, reflects on the
song.
Differences:
• Very simple video, everything is black and white.
• Rihanna, Paul McCartney and Kanye West are all dressed
in denim.
• Fully clothed at all times, fully denim, however you can
see quite a bit of Rihanna’s chest.
• Group shots of the three singers.
• Camera doesn’t really go anywhere, just shows them in a
white room, nothing more.
Similarities:
• Lots of close up shots of faces.
• Some parts of both videos show very special but simple affects.
• Some aspects of black and white in the first video and the
whole of the second is black and white.
Not many dance moves on either of the videos mostly just shows
them wandering about.
• Mise-en-scene: both very simple lighting, whites, light
blues etc.. Also shows the singers wearing very simple
things, first video all he wears is white clothing and in
the second video all they wear is denim clothing.
6. Differences:
• Girls drooling all over the man.
• Boy runs after the girl in this video, doing her hair and
make up etc.. Making her food.
• Mise-en-scene: lighting looks quite dark in this video,
and the female is wearing bright red clothing and bright
red lipstick, the lighting in this video helps to emphasis
the shape of the female and her dance moves.
• This video have a lot of dance routines from both sex.
Similarities:
• Women in both videos have hardly any clothes on,
revealing a lot of skin.
• In both videos both females are dancing quite sexually,
seems like they haven’t got much respect for themselves.
• Both videos also have lots of close up particularly on the
females bodies .
Differences:
• Women don’t necessarily have more respect for themselves
than in the first video, but have slightly better in the way
that they don’t drool over the men in the second video.
• However, in the second video the woman is looking after
the man.
• In this video the Mise-en-scene; lighting is very simple, very
light colours
• However, this video hasn’t got any dance routines and
mostly just shows them standing around drinking or their
sexual relationship.
• Again, lots of wide shots from both videos to show how much
money they have and showing the big house that they’re
living in.
• Shows alcohol in both videos.
• And also a lot of Voyeurism in both videos.
