1. Introduction to Integrated Development Association
(IDEA)

2. IDEA established in June 1990 mainly to assist rural communities to
address rural energy and associated issues in Sri Lanka.

3. Vision
A society with affordable & sustainable energy
options.
Mission
IDEA strives to promote harmony between people and the
environment and enable all segment of the society to have a more
control over their lives and contribute to their development.

4. Empowering the community to achieve sustainable development.
Despite moderate economic growth in the country within the
context of energy scenario it is likely that biomass will remain to
be the major source of energy for cooking for a few more
decades. In addition to the global concerns of climate change
impact improvement of efficiency of traditional wood use has
been a necessary national concern to sustain the use of local
renewable resources.

5. In this context IDEA was established with a view to promote
improved cook stove programme launched by CEB and ITDG at
that time. The stove promoted by above organization was called
‘Anagi’ and it has been the most popular one
Since the inception of the cook stove programme in Sri Lanka
about 4.0 million stoves have been marketed throughout the
country and large number of poor families have been benefitted
and able to get rid of poverty.

6. IDEA has been able to commercialise the Anagi stove programme
successfully and make a significant contribution to poverty
alleviation and reduction of emission of green house gases.
In addition IDEA has introduced similar industrial stoves to
number of cottage industries such as jaggery, and large scale
kitchens in hotels and orphanage temple etc. in Sri lanka making
them more energy efficient.
IDEA has developed the capacity CBOs and NGOs across the
country to address rural energy issues and establish network.

7. While focussing on stoves IDEA has under taken several studies
on associated issues with cooking such as indoor air pollution
introduce and implemented a very successful kitchen improvement
programme in rural areas together with network members.
In addition IDEA has expanded its activities into several other
areas somas to address other rural development issues as it was
not possible to separate those issues from energy.

8. The following list of project activities will give an idea about the
widened scope.
IDEA has been a service provider for GEF small grant programme
in Sri Lanka so to improve the capacity of its partners.
