James is a renewable energy practitioner with experience of over 10 years post-graduation experience, of
which 5 are in the Renewable Energy Sector. He holds a degree in Biomechanical and Processing
Engineering; currently he is pursuing a master’s degree in Energy Technology. He has capacity to lead
projects that include energy technology development; communities based renewable energy interventions
and energy enterprises for Last Mile Entrepreneurs (LMEs).
James has professional experience in wide range of renewable energy technologies which includes,
improved cook stoves, carbonized briquettes, biomass gasification, biogas, biofuel, wind turbines, solar and
hybrid technologies. He has worked both locally and regionally i.e. in Kenya, Tanzania and in Uganda in
supporting energy programmes, Developing Energy Enterprises Project East Africa (DEEP-EA),
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (REEEP- Uganda), Improved Cookstove Toolkit
development for LMEs in Uganda, Sector support tool sponsored by SNV under the Integrated Renewable
Energy Services (IRES) project.
James has been responsible for implementing Renewable Energy Projects since 2009, when he played a
role as a change agent for the adoption of clean energy technology for the community. He successfully
rolled out the implementation of Renewable Energy for Socio Cultural and Universal Ecology (RESCUE)
project whose aim was to install biogas units at households and Learning Institutions to curb overreliance
on wood fuel, install micro wind turbines which were locally manufactured to light up off- grid Primary
2. Schools with ideal wind regime. The project was both capacity building and technology transfer, by the end
of the project in 2012 a total of 150 masons were trained on construction and piping of biogas and 20
artisans trained and linked to Craftskills Limited a local manufacturing wind turbines in Kenya. In addition
20 schools and 50 households were support to install biogas.
In 2014, James provided support in research data collection on bioethanol use as a household fuel. The
data to inform on cost benefit analysis for policy recommendation to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum,
Kenya. In 2010, James provided research support for the design and domestication of household micro
gasifiers under the stove research project. The project was funded by Shalin.ry- Finland and co-
implemented by Kenya Industrial Research and Development institute (KIRDI). 25 units were designed and
piloted in 5 ecological zones on usability and efficacy. In 2007, under student attachment programme at
Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), James was part of the team at KIRDI that
was involved in reserve engineering for the development of an arc welding machine conducive for the
Kenyan scenario.
In 2011, James was appointed as the Technology Coordinator for Tanzania to support the implementation
of the EU funded Developing Energy Enterprises Project in East Africa (DEEP EA), where he oversaw the
delivery of technical services to over 328 micro enterprises Tanzania – covering solar PV, biomass
(briquetting), biogas, and improved cookstoves. Subsequent to this, he has played the role of Task
Manager for the Renewable energy for off-grid communities in rural Kenya; Kenya Agricultural Productivity
and Agribusiness Project (KAPAP), ESolar Franchise Project- unlocking the energy access in Kenya,
Policy brief on bioethanol as a household cooking fuel in Kenya, Energy Digest, Sustainable Energy for All
(SE4All) expanding the Action Agenda and Investment Prospectus for Kenya.
James is currently an Energy Advisor at Integral and responsible for energy project implementation and
business development.
