What’s the title? Put it down along with today’s date and
classwork – underline both with a ruler as always please.

Learning Objectives
Understand how protons, neutrons and electrons make up an
atom
Be able to digitally build an atom
Start to differentiate between types of radioactive decay

Success crits
Labelled diagrams of atoms; matrix of radioactive decay types;
a smile.
The big picture/steps to understanding are......
1.

What particles make up a nucleus? How are they different?
We’ll watch a clip, discuss and draw a labelled diagram.

2.

How does this relate to elements? I’ve seen this in the periodic
table but how are they linked? We’ll watch another video, draw
a quick sketch and then practice this by building atoms on a
website.

3.

What is radiation/radioactive decay? What are the different
types? You’ll do some independent work here to research how
they are different – choose how to present your notes in your
books for homework.
Basic atomic structure

Watch. Draw diagram. Label. Shade in if
time.
A suggested start for your
diagram....
What particles are found
here – and what charge
and mass do they have?

What’s this called? What
charge does it have?
What mass?
How does this relate to elements in
the periodic table?
Right – explain these!

Practice!
Now it’s over to you.


Planners out please. Write down that you have
Science homework, to be handed in first lesson
with me next week.



Your homework is to create notes on the three
different types of radioactive decay. My
expectations:
◦ At least half a page per type
◦ Mix of text/shaded & labelled diagrams
◦ Includes info from more than one source
◦ Presentation, literacy, effort all top drawer
Last main task


Spend the rest of your lesson time
researching & reading up on the three
main types of radioactive decay
◦ Alpha
◦ Beta
◦ Gamma

Use BTEC texts, laptops, 3G
 At least 10 minutes NO WRITING

Exit ticket
Grab a mobile device
 Go to m.socrative.com
 Log in as a student to room 26983
 Complete the questions you find there to
summarise your learning today
 Problem - Re-write this statement
correctly “An element’s atomic number
shows the number of electrons in a
nucleus; it’s mass number is the
number of electrons and protons
surrounding the nucleus.”
