A NEW CONCEPT ON BOAT PROPULSION

INNOVANAUTIC, is an engineering company with a technical
staff widely experienced in energy efficiency and design of
renewable power systems, and control electronics.

Our developments, products and engineering works results in the
most advanced, complete and reliable systems for increase the
confort degree aboard, thanks to the e-propulsion for boats and the
  energy management systems.

INNOVANAUTIC innovates the concepts, the processes and the
components of the boat that allow to improve the efficient use of the
energy and reduce the pressure over the environment
MAIN REASONS FOR A NEW DEVELOPMENTS

The internal combustion engines, are powerfull and widely applied to several
fields of the motion world, but the costs of it's operation is every day higher
and also the maintenance cost are increassing every year.

On the other hand the efficiency of the fuel wasted on a traditional engine,
draw mean global efficiencies arround 25%.

For the e-propulsion systems, electric motors, direct drive to the shaft draws
efficiencies ratios better that 70%, from the batteries.

If this electric motor is powered by a high efficiency generator, the efficiency
of the complete system could be better than 50%.
E-PROPULSION SYSTEM
Innovanautic applies on boats all the know-how and experience of the
technical team to combine the e-propulsion system based on a high
efficiency drive train, that allow to use two different ways to power it, or a
combination of both, depending on the boat characteristics and capabilities.

The first option is based on battery accumulation, and Innovanautic
could offer the best choice and technology on this field, preferably
deep cycle batteries and some new developments performing the
state of the art on accumulators.

The second option is based on the technology applied on new big
cargo boats and the most efficient passengers boats in the world, that
includes a genset to produce electrical energy at high efficiency
controlled by the energy management that ensures that the generator
always works in the best load level to achieve the maximum efficiency.
THE ENERGY: Sources and consumptions
All the experience of INNOVANAUTIC on developing renewable systems and
equipment is applied on the boats to contribute, in the most efficient way to
drive all the energy generated to the system, deciding time to time where the
energy will be more necessary to the user.

In order to achieve the best efficiency ratios, the management system applies
advanced algorithms in the control system, and the best quality components

MPPT systems for the renewable sources, connected and controlled
         by the databus.

Active management of the main consumtion aboard, the source of the
energy and the efficiency of the unit (freezer, hot water, etc)

Maximization of all energy sources, deciding the best choice to
         accumulate it
THE KEY: THE ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Our concept bases the efficiency of the whole system on three main concepts.

Integrating the control of all energy sources available, renewables and
conventional, generating a controlled “micromix” aboard
Controlled MPPT systems for the renewable sources.
Priorization of the renewables in front of conventionals.
If the conventional sources will be started, ensures full load.

Active management of main energy consumers

Reducing the energy peaks by sumultaneusly operation.
Verifying the efficiency of operation of each.

Improving and managing the accumulation units

We accumulate in different systems, battery, hot, cold, etc
Following the state of the art to improve the future.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: Main goals

Our products applied on boats, means some advantatges in front of
   conventional systems.
E-power: Electric motor propulsion meanning no fossil, efficiency,
silent, reliable, simplicity and safety. Also the electric system allow to
          include power from renewable energy.
Confort: Incresing the confort aboard without diesel smell, silence ,
and power for the freezer, hot water, heaters or others, and 230 Vac
          power during the trip.
Safety: By the simplicity of the system, the protection degree of the
components, and the different operation modes that allow to power
the propulsion by different ways, and extra propulsion power in case
          of difficulties.
Rules compliant: Our system is already legalized in boats in one of
the strongest regulation in EU (Spain administration) and main
components are fully certificated for its use in naval industry arround
          the world.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: The benefits

The system allow to us to offer some benefits to the naval industry, that
was difficult to achieve with fossil systems.

Energy savings, In front of fossil propulsion systems that gives
global efficiencies arround 25%, the e-propulsion achieve arround
60% of global efficiency, that means an important energy saving not
only for the user, even for the world.
Enviromental friendly, because there aren't any fossil deposalson
the enviroment, noises and zero CO2 emissions.

Economics, Higer efficiencies, low maintenance of the equipment
and the availability of the industrial components, means important
          money savings for the user.
Safety, The system redundance that allow to power up the system by
different ways, means an extra safety level in front of the
conventional systems that a simple pump component damage means
that the user cannot return to harbour.
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

To design a new application, in leissure boats or even in professional
boats like sea-cleaners, local fishers, and others, we work on the
   following items.

Complete evaluation of the application, consumptions, and all energy
issues aboard., like nominal speed of the boat and different energy
         situations.

Detection of the main consumption that will be act as energy
accumulators like freezer, pressure systems or others.

Propulsion system calculation according to the real drag of the boat,
         defining the complete drive train.

Apllying the safety factors to dimmensinning the motor power
         required.
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

As mentioned above, depending of the size, drag and boat characteristics,
the systems will be sized to drive the boat properly.

The drag for a sail boat of
 42 feet, is aproximated by
 calculation from the data
 from the hull, keel, rudder
 and heeling.
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

For each boat and hull and appendix characteristics, the optimal speed for
    this system could be aproximated.

 The hull drag and the
 Residuary data cross
together in the area that is
 considered the optimum
 speed, due that above this
 speed the consumption per
 knot ratio increases.
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

Different factors will be considered on the theoretical calculations, like
efficiency of the transmission system, motor and weather and sea
conditions, that increases the power size of the system.

   Some examples:

Boat type and LOA e-propulsion system size

Sail cruiser 30 feet 5 kW
Sail cruiser 36 feet 7,5 kW
Sail cruiser 40 feet 11 kW
Sail cruiser 42 feet 15 kW
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

According to this power and how it's used, the battery bank will be sized to
   achieve the desired autonomy.

The battery bank have different ratios according to the technology applied.

                                 AGM technology Li-ion

   Energy density (Wh/Kg) 41,67 75,76
Price (related to AGM) 1 4,5
   Space requirements High Low
   Life expectation (cycles) 500 3000
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

Using the energy for the e-propulsion:

Some examples of power consumption and autonomy are showed in this
table for a 42 feet boat and a battery bank of 20 kWh stored.

                                Knots Condition Hours miles

Near harbour and mooring 3 Coast 37,3 116
   Aproximation to harbour 4 Coast 15,14 62,8
Travel medium speed 5 Open sea 7,07 36
Travel full speed 6,2 Open sea 3,7 23
DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS
The LI-ion batteries could be placed in less space, and have more layour
configuration than heavier AGM ones, and for new construction boats, one
of the most interesting places for this type of batteries is the keel, replacing
some part of the keel ballast.
As example, 10 kWh has 16 modules and a total weight of arround 135 Kg,
and could be placed in a stainless steel case that allow to take off the
   batteries if it's necessary.

  • 1. A NEW CONCEPT ON BOAT PROPULSION INNOVANAUTIC, is an engineering company with a technical staff widely experienced in energy efficiency and design of renewable power systems, and control electronics. Our developments, products and engineering works results in the most advanced, complete and reliable systems for increase the confort degree aboard, thanks to the e-propulsion for boats and the energy management systems. INNOVANAUTIC innovates the concepts, the processes and the components of the boat that allow to improve the efficient use of the energy and reduce the pressure over the environment
  • 2. MAIN REASONS FOR A NEW DEVELOPMENTS The internal combustion engines, are powerfull and widely applied to several fields of the motion world, but the costs of it's operation is every day higher and also the maintenance cost are increassing every year. On the other hand the efficiency of the fuel wasted on a traditional engine, draw mean global efficiencies arround 25%. For the e-propulsion systems, electric motors, direct drive to the shaft draws efficiencies ratios better that 70%, from the batteries. If this electric motor is powered by a high efficiency generator, the efficiency of the complete system could be better than 50%.
  • 3. E-PROPULSION SYSTEM Innovanautic applies on boats all the know-how and experience of the technical team to combine the e-propulsion system based on a high efficiency drive train, that allow to use two different ways to power it, or a combination of both, depending on the boat characteristics and capabilities. The first option is based on battery accumulation, and Innovanautic could offer the best choice and technology on this field, preferably deep cycle batteries and some new developments performing the state of the art on accumulators. The second option is based on the technology applied on new big cargo boats and the most efficient passengers boats in the world, that includes a genset to produce electrical energy at high efficiency controlled by the energy management that ensures that the generator always works in the best load level to achieve the maximum efficiency.
  • 4. THE ENERGY: Sources and consumptions All the experience of INNOVANAUTIC on developing renewable systems and equipment is applied on the boats to contribute, in the most efficient way to drive all the energy generated to the system, deciding time to time where the energy will be more necessary to the user. In order to achieve the best efficiency ratios, the management system applies advanced algorithms in the control system, and the best quality components MPPT systems for the renewable sources, connected and controlled by the databus. Active management of the main consumtion aboard, the source of the energy and the efficiency of the unit (freezer, hot water, etc) Maximization of all energy sources, deciding the best choice to accumulate it
  • 5. THE KEY: THE ENERGY MANAGEMENT Our concept bases the efficiency of the whole system on three main concepts. Integrating the control of all energy sources available, renewables and conventional, generating a controlled “micromix” aboard Controlled MPPT systems for the renewable sources. Priorization of the renewables in front of conventionals. If the conventional sources will be started, ensures full load. Active management of main energy consumers Reducing the energy peaks by sumultaneusly operation. Verifying the efficiency of operation of each. Improving and managing the accumulation units We accumulate in different systems, battery, hot, cold, etc Following the state of the art to improve the future.
  • 6. HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: Main goals Our products applied on boats, means some advantatges in front of conventional systems. E-power: Electric motor propulsion meanning no fossil, efficiency, silent, reliable, simplicity and safety. Also the electric system allow to include power from renewable energy. Confort: Incresing the confort aboard without diesel smell, silence , and power for the freezer, hot water, heaters or others, and 230 Vac power during the trip. Safety: By the simplicity of the system, the protection degree of the components, and the different operation modes that allow to power the propulsion by different ways, and extra propulsion power in case of difficulties. Rules compliant: Our system is already legalized in boats in one of the strongest regulation in EU (Spain administration) and main components are fully certificated for its use in naval industry arround the world.
  • 7. HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: The benefits The system allow to us to offer some benefits to the naval industry, that was difficult to achieve with fossil systems. Energy savings, In front of fossil propulsion systems that gives global efficiencies arround 25%, the e-propulsion achieve arround 60% of global efficiency, that means an important energy saving not only for the user, even for the world. Enviromental friendly, because there aren't any fossil deposalson the enviroment, noises and zero CO2 emissions. Economics, Higer efficiencies, low maintenance of the equipment and the availability of the industrial components, means important money savings for the user. Safety, The system redundance that allow to power up the system by different ways, means an extra safety level in front of the conventional systems that a simple pump component damage means that the user cannot return to harbour.
  • 8. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT To design a new application, in leissure boats or even in professional boats like sea-cleaners, local fishers, and others, we work on the following items. Complete evaluation of the application, consumptions, and all energy issues aboard., like nominal speed of the boat and different energy situations. Detection of the main consumption that will be act as energy accumulators like freezer, pressure systems or others. Propulsion system calculation according to the real drag of the boat, defining the complete drive train. Apllying the safety factors to dimmensinning the motor power required.
  • 9. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS As mentioned above, depending of the size, drag and boat characteristics, the systems will be sized to drive the boat properly. The drag for a sail boat of 42 feet, is aproximated by calculation from the data from the hull, keel, rudder and heeling.
  • 10. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS For each boat and hull and appendix characteristics, the optimal speed for this system could be aproximated. The hull drag and the Residuary data cross together in the area that is considered the optimum speed, due that above this speed the consumption per knot ratio increases.
  • 11. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS Different factors will be considered on the theoretical calculations, like efficiency of the transmission system, motor and weather and sea conditions, that increases the power size of the system. Some examples: Boat type and LOA e-propulsion system size Sail cruiser 30 feet 5 kW Sail cruiser 36 feet 7,5 kW Sail cruiser 40 feet 11 kW Sail cruiser 42 feet 15 kW
  • 12. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS According to this power and how it's used, the battery bank will be sized to achieve the desired autonomy. The battery bank have different ratios according to the technology applied. AGM technology Li-ion Energy density (Wh/Kg) 41,67 75,76 Price (related to AGM) 1 4,5 Space requirements High Low Life expectation (cycles) 500 3000
  • 13. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS Using the energy for the e-propulsion: Some examples of power consumption and autonomy are showed in this table for a 42 feet boat and a battery bank of 20 kWh stored. Knots Condition Hours miles Near harbour and mooring 3 Coast 37,3 116 Aproximation to harbour 4 Coast 15,14 62,8 Travel medium speed 5 Open sea 7,07 36 Travel full speed 6,2 Open sea 3,7 23
  • 14. DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS The LI-ion batteries could be placed in less space, and have more layour configuration than heavier AGM ones, and for new construction boats, one of the most interesting places for this type of batteries is the keel, replacing some part of the keel ballast. As example, 10 kWh has 16 modules and a total weight of arround 135 Kg, and could be placed in a stainless steel case that allow to take off the batteries if it's necessary.
  • 15. TECNOLOGY: Drive train All the components for the drive train, like electric motor, and drive are cetified for its use in marine equipment for both, primary systems and secondary systems, manufactures by firsts brands in the industrial market witha wide experience in the marine market. The accumulation systems are manufactured by leading companies and are warranteed by 5 years with a life expectation of 10 years. The engineering for its integration and control is completely carried by INNOVANAUTIC.
  • 16. TECHNOLOGY: control and design All the control, mnitoring and management components are designed and produced by INNOVANAUTIC, including electronics design and integration engineering.
  • 17. STATE OF THE ART: The future components The system layout and architecture, allow to integrate easily new developments that for sure will be in the short medium time on the market, due that most of these new developments, will be on the same range of the industrial market. Batteries: In the near future, other battery technology, better for the enviroment and with more capacity at market costs will be available. Fuel Cells: That will be on the market soon, could be connected to the system to gives energy to it. New features: eWe already work on the future capabilities of the system, like domotic features, alarms, and other new developments that could be added to existing systems.
  • 18. MAIN COMPONENTS: Standard propulsion system. The best results will be obtained by the direct drive solution, avoiding gear losses and other components that means poor efficiencies.
  • 19. MAIN COMPONENTS: Sail drive coupling. For this coupling, a complete case study must be done, and we strongly recommend the vertical motor installation, due efficiency reasons. ᄎ Note: The installation with a fold propeller, avoid the option of regenerating energy while sail.
  • 20. MAIN COMPONENTS: Safety Our protection cabinet, manufactured in stainless steel enclosure IP66, include the electrical protections, the main power and control electronics and the safety selectors, including: Risk selector: That allow automatically the risk mode, and the controlled overload of the propulsión, to avoid risk for the boat.
