12. Writing As A Whole Our main focus is writing but it is not our only focus. Your organization, The Thinking Foundation, supports research on cognitive research development (such as literacy) from pre-school and through the college years. In short, you support critical thinking and metacognitive skills What we do may not be research but it is effective and it certainly impacts the literacy of our members.
13. Community Need Here are some statistics on our nation’s current literacy status: Approximately 50 percent of the nation's unemployed youth age 16-21 are functional illiterate, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) U.S. adults ranked 12th among 20 high income countries in composite (document, prose, and quantitative) literacy. (according to a report by Educational Testing Service) Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3 - 4 times more likely to drop out in later years. (National Adult Literacy Survey, (1002) NCES, U.S. Department of Education) To participate fully in society and the workplace in 2020, citizens will need powerful literacy abilities that until now have been achieved by only a small percentage of the population. (National Council on Teachers of English Standards for the English Language Arts)

18. Writing I feel that writing is important Throughout our long history, it can be said that he who writes makes others read What that means is that writing is an incredibly powerful ability that is often overlooked Our logo, the feathered pen, is that symbol of power More importantly, it is a symbol for writing one’s destiny in the blank pages of life which is what we strive to achieve for our youths: for them to follow their dreams. Even though in our modern time almost everybody can write letters and sentences on paper, there are few who can write well and convey their purpose in writing This is why I feel it is important to support the development of writing in our youths
