Tsunami is a Japanese word Tsu means ‘harbour’ and nami means ‘wave’. They are called tidal waves but they have actually nothing to do with the tides. However their appearance from shore is similar to rapidly rising or falling tides. Tsunami is a series of wave created when water is moved very quickly. Tsunami is gravity wave system, triggered by vertical disturbances in ocean. They are long waves sometime with hundreds of miles b/w their crests, just like the concentric waves generated by an object dropped into a pool. First tsunami was recorded in 1480 B.C. in eastern Mediterranean, when the Minoan civilization was wiped out. A large tsunami accompanied by the earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The Kutch earthquake of June 16, 1819 generated strong tsunami which submerged the coastal areas and damage to ships and country made boats of fishermen. North and South American records have dated such events back to 1788 for Alaska and 1562 for Chile. Records of Hawaiian tsunami go back to 1821. Tsunami hits the Mona Passage off Puerto Rico in 1918, grand banks of Canada in 1929.

Geologically active faults within 50 to 500km distance from Dhaka. Dhaka is among the 20 major world cities that are the greatest risk from earthquakes. Some of these earthquakes especially the 1762, 1812, 1865, 1885 and 1897 happened in Dhaka. If 7-8 grade in Richter Scale earthquake happen in Dhaka 70-80 percent concrete structures would just collapse and 30,00,000 peoples will die.

Earthquake and Bangladesh: Overview of Earthquake Earthquake in Bangladesh Earthquake probability in Bangladesh Causes of earthquake in Bangladesh Earthquake risk in Dhaka Effects of earthquake in Bangladesh Earthquake risk mitigation in Bangladesh Conclusion Shaking of the earth caused by the sudden displacement of rock blocks along plate boundaries and faults. Reasons can be natural or human activities. The most common scale used for measuring an earthquake is Richter Scale. Earthquakes have secondary hazards like flood, landslides, fire, Tsunamis, Liquefaction etc. Due to the subduction of the Philippine Sea plate beneath the Okinawa plate and Amurian plate, Japan has observed a series of several high-intensity earthquakes. Death tolls from major event sighted as 255,000 at Tangshan in China 1976. By its geographical position, Bangladesh is being treated as one very vulnerable country with its high risk of earthquake attack. Bangladesh is located in a tectonically active much of the country including Chittagong, Sylhet, Dhaka, Rangpur, Bogra, Mymensingh, Comilla, Rajshahi are very much vulnerable to major earthquake disaster. Bangladesh can be divided into three main earthquake zones: Zone-1: Sylhet-Mymensingh is with the possible magnitude of 7 on Richter scale. Zone-2: Chittagong-Comilla-Dhaka and Tangail are with the possible magnitude of 6 on Richter scale. Zone-3: Rest of the country is with possible magnitude of 6 on Richter scale. Effects of earthquake in Bangladesh: Water supply failure as almost all the deep tube wells are run by power, and possible water line damage Damage of roads and blockage of traffic due to falling of debris from collapsed buildings and other installations on or near roads. Some of the hospital buildings may collapse killing a large number of inmates and stopping medical facilities for the disaster victims. Some of the school building may collapse killing and injuring a large number of students An after shock may cause further collapse of many of the already damaged buildings. A few rescue equipment whatever is available, can not be operated due to the lack of guidance, availability of operators, some will be non-functional, some will be under the rubbles, some can not find access to rescue spots due to road blockage, etc.

The 2016 Ecuador earthquake occurred on April 16 at 18:58:37 ECT with a moment magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The very large thrust earthquake was centered approximately 27 km (17 mi) from the towns of Muisne and Pedernales in a sparsely populated part of the country, and 170 km (110 mi) from the capital Quito, where it was felt strongly. Regions of Manta, Pedernales and Portoviejo accounted for over 75 percent of total casualties.[6] Manta's central commercial shopping district Tarqui, was completely destroyed. Widespread damage was caused across Manabi province, with structures hundreds of kilometres from the epicenter collapsing. At least 659 people were killed and 27,732 people injured. President Rafael Correa declared a state of emergency; 13,500 military personnel and police officers were dispatched for recovery operations.

A disaster is --- the set of failures that overwhelm the capability of a community to respond without external help when three continuums: 1) people, 2) community (i.e., a set of habitats, livelihoods, and social constructs), and 3) complex events (e.g., earthquakes, landslides,..) intersect at a point in space and time. VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS are awesome manifestations of heat flowing as a result of mantle hot spots (e.g., Hawaii and Iceland) or explosive eruptions in subduction zones (e.g., the Pacific Rim). LESSON: THE KNOWLEDGE AND TIMING OF ANTICIPATORY ACTIONS IS VITAL. The people who know: 1) what hazards to expect (e.g., vertical ash plume, lateral blast, lava flow, lahar), 2) where and when they will happen, and 3) what they should (and should not) do to prepare for them will survive. The people who have timely, realistic, advance information that facilitates reduction of vulnerabilities, and hence the risks associated with the vertical ash plume, pyroclastic flows, tephra, lava flows, and lahars will survive. The people who have timely, accurate, advance information that facilitates evacuation to get our of harm’s way of pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and lahars will survive. The International Community provides millions to billions of dollars in relief to help “pick up the pieces, ” but this strategy is not enough by itself to ensure earthquake disaster resilience. THE CHALLENGE: CREATE, ADJUST, AND REALIGN PROGRAMS, PARTNERS AND PEOPLE UNTIL YOU HAVE CREATED THE KINDS OF TURNING POINTS NEEDED FOR MOVING TOWARDS VOLCANO DISASTER RESILIENCE. With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.
