familiar with the internet applications and
its uses.
• Justify internet applications.
• Analyze the internet protocols being
used for the internet.
10. Z
Learning Outcomes
• Determine the theoretical perspectives
that influence the internet applications.
• Compare the internet tools and services
that are very useful for the applications of

includes millions of public and private,
academic, business and government

communicate through the ISP.
• Computer
• In addition to a modem, you need a
hardware capable for handling multiple
data types.
13. Z
Hardware and Software
of the Internet
• Software
• Two types of software’s required to
enable your PC as an internet PC.
• Communication Software to
establish connection.
• Client Software for browsing, e-
mail and news. These software’s are
provided by windows itself.
14. Z
Applications of Internet
• Downloaded programs and files
• E-mail
• Voice and Video Conferencing
• E-commerce
• File Sharing
• Information Browsing
• Search the web addresses using search
engines
• Chat and a lot more
15. Z
Disadvantage of
the Internet
• Theft of Personal Information: such as
names, address, credit card number, etc.
• Virus Threats: nothing but a program
which disrupts the normal functioning of
the system.
• Spamming: refers to receiving
unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide
no purpose and needlessly obstruct the
entire system.
16. Z
Disadvantage of
the Internet
• Pornography: this is perhaps the
biggest threat related to children’s healthy
mental life. A very serious issue
concerning the internet.
“Though, internet can create destruction
and its misuse can be very fatal, the
advantages of it outweigh its
disadvantages.”
17. Z
Intranet

• Internal company network that uses
internet standards (HTML, HTTP and
TCP/IP protocols) and software.
• Accessed only by authorized person,
especially members or employees of
the organization.
18. Z
Intranet Security
• Two levels of Security Required:
• Internal
• Can be imposed by public Key
Security and Encryption Key.
• External
• Through Firewall.
19. Z
Intranet Security
• What is Firewall?
• Security device located between
firm’s internal network (intranet) and
external network (internet)
• Regulates access into and out of
company’s network based on a set of
rules.
“Needs to be upgraded from time to time to
check potential security problems.”
20. Z
Applications of Intranet
• Sharing of company policies & rules

productivity
• True purpose of intranet is unknown
to many employees or departments

• Technical employees are required
28. Z
What are the Major
Internet Tools and Services
• HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)
• FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
• E-mail
• IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
• WWW (World Wide Web)
• Gopher
• WAIS
29. Z
HTTP (Hypertext
Transfer Protocol)
• Allows setting rules that computers use
to move files from one computer to
another on the internet
• It is the most common transfer protocol
used on the internet
• You can see this protocol often before
the URL.
• E.g. http://www.google.com
30. Z
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
• Allows the transfer or copying of files
from one computer to another
• Ideal for procuring or sending files to a
remote computer
• FTP programs are available freely
• Modern browsers have built-in FTP
capabilities
31. Z
E-Mail
• The most popular use of the Internet
• Available for free on the web
• Gmail
• Yahoomail
• Hotmail
• Valid email address consists of a
username and a domain name separated
by the “@” sign.
• E.g. juandelacruz@gmail.com
32. Z
IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
• Allows real time, text based
communication through the internet
• Organized by topic of interest through
“channels”
• Discussion occurs in “Chat Rooms”
• Some website have built-in chat rooms.
34. Z
WWW (World Wide Web)
• Invented in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee,
the web is the fastest-growing internet
service
• Based on HTML(Hyper Text Markup
Language) allowing users to access data in
multimedia format
• Simplest unit is the webpage, primarily a
document encoded in HTML format that
can be accessed using a browser
35. Z
WWW (World Wide Web)
• HTML links contents within a web page
to each other as well as to other web pages
through a hyperlink
• Each page has an address, a URL
(Uniform Resource Locator)
36. Z
Gopher
• Allows user to access files from a
different computers by looking through
hierarchical menus to finds specific topics.
A document may be text, sounds, image or
other type of file.
• A program called Jughead can be used to
search for topics found with gopher files.
38. Z
WAIS (Wide Area
Information Services)
• WAIS is a search engine developed for
the internet
• It allows one to search the complete text
of a document
