Company Profile: ARL has the privilege to be the pioneer of crude oil refining in Pakistan. Moreover it started its operation in the 1922. ARL refinery
reached its first milestone with the installation of plant with LUMNIUS with 5,500 bpd to supply the required demand generated by the oil discovered at
Dhulian. During 1968 oil reserves were discovered at Toot and meyal. To meet the new demand in the future, new plants, HBU 1 and HBU 2.ARL's current
Expansion / Up-gradation Projects comprises of Preflash unit, Naphtha Isomerization unit, Diesel Hydro Desulphurization (DHDS) unit this would increase
refinery capacity and would enable ARL to produce Euro II compliant low sulphur diesel. ARL is the first refinery in Pakistan to declare implementation of ISO
50001 (Energy Management System).
HEAVY CRUDE UNIT
PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Heavy crude from battery limits is charged into the crude header. Which then passes
through bucket type strainer. Crude is then pumped into Preheater chain 1. This chain
consists of five shell and tube heat exchanger and temperature achieved through this
chain is 140 C. Crude is then directed to desalters in order to separate saltish water
from crude. This crude is then passed through second preheater change in order to
reduce heater duty and utilize the heat of refluxes and product. Temperature achieved
at the end of this chain is 20 C. Crude is then heated in natural draft heater to the
temperature of 315 C, This heated crude is then fed into the atmospheric tower
maintained at the temperature of 1.3 ATM. Top product is collected in an overhead
condenser, which is mainly naphtha which is further processed to in naphtha stabilizer
separate LPG vapors and remaining naphtha becomes the feed of the Reformer. From
the middle of Atmospheric tower three fractions are separated which include
kerosene, High speed diesel and light diesel oil. While from bottom remaining heavier
product (FFO) is again heated in second heater to the temp of 327 C. Which is then
fed into Vacuum tower, From the top of a vacuum tower light vacuum gases are
separated. From middle slop oil and jute batch oil is obtained while from bottom
bitumen is separated.

Attock Refinery has one of the best health and safety department with their emergency team available 24/17 to tackle any situation with a perfect way of
communication which is a necessity of any refinery. It is the best place for grooming of chemical engineers where they apply their theoretical knowledge into
practical and earn a valuable experience.
