boilers are available naturally follow.
“Types of boilers,” though, is a slippery term that can mean any number of things, depending on
who does the asking. In some cases, the question pertains to fuel type. Others, though, classify
boilers according to the type of combustion technology they use.
In short, there are multiple ways of thinking about “types of boilers” and classifying industrial
boilers. This can sometimes cause confusion. Which is why we put together the following
rundown of the four different ways to classify types of industrial boilers: function, design,

Types of Industrial Boilers According to Function

Hot water boilers don’t really factor into industrial plants. They are typically used in domestic or
commercial applications to supply hot water.
Classes of Industrial Boilers by Tube Type
You’ll often see references to industrial boilers by design or tube type. Boilers classified according
to tube type come in two variations: fire tube boilers and water tube boilers.[3]
Fire Tube Boilers
Fire tube boilers take hot gases from their heating source and pass them through tubes that run
through a water-filled drum. This transfers heat from the gases to the water to generate steam. This
simple design makes fire tube boilers relatively inexpensive to purchase and easy to operate.
Fire-tube boilers have relatively small steam capacities and generate low to medium degrees of
pressure. They can be used for steam rates up to roughly 26,000 pounds per hour.
Water Tube Boilers
Water tube boilers reverse the basic configuration of fire-tube boilers, routing water through their
tubes and surrounding those tubes with a drum filled with hot gases or heating elements in order to
produce steam. This design makes water tube boilers more thermally efficient than fire tube

Used widely for industrial process applications that require high pressures, water tube boilers can
produce anywhere from 10,000 to 1,000,000 pounds of steam per hour. To optimize operation,
water tube boilers must be supplied with good-quality water, which requires a supporting water
treatment system.
Industrial Boilers by Fuel Type
Many classify, or talk about, boilers according to the fuel they burn. The possibilities are quite
diverse.
Coal: Coal fired boiler. Most industrial boilers burn pulverized coal, which fires more efficiently
than coal clumps.
Biomass: Biomass fired boiler. Biomass encompasses all types of burnable plant material, such
as wood chips, sugar cane husks, and even wooden construction debris.
Gas: Gas-fired boilers burn natural gas, which can be a mix of methane, ethane, propane, butane,
or pentane.
Oil: Oil fired boilers that burn gasoline, diesel, or other petroleum-based fluids are classified as
oil-fired boilers.
